Screen size...CRT vs LCD

I was reading somewhere that and LCD screen size is measure differently from a CRT. Meaning a 17 inch LCD has more screen area than a 17 inch CRT. Is this true?

How do they differ in the way they are measured?

with CRTs, you take the size of the enclosure into account as well when measuring.. so a 15'' LCD is slightly smaller than 17'' CRT in terms of viewable area.

Correct... the measurement given is the length of the diagonal, but while LCD measurements are only of the viewable area, CRT measurements include the bezel (unless it specifically states "viewable", e.g. 17" CRT, 16" viewable)

The WHOLE tube is measured on a CRT. Including whats covered by the case.

A 17" LCD will show more screen than a 17" CRT.

Thats why you see some monitors say 15.5 "viewable".
