screen size becomes small when resolution changes

I change my laptop resolution to 800x600 and the screen size becomes really really small. It's a Sony VAIO, like 3 or 4 years old.

Native resolution of laptops is what they're supposed to be at. Say, if you make the resolution higher than the native, the screen can't adjust that large and you get the scrolling screen effect. I don't think it should do that if you go smaller, but it may. There's no buttons or anything to adjust screen width/height?
