Screen Resolution

I'm not a noob and realize that @ higher resolutions u can see more stuff, but at 16X10 how long can you last before you go blind from squinting so much. And dont you see less in games. Pls fix my knowledge if its wrong.

HMM, ok if your desktop was that res, yes it be tiny and text be giving you a sore head, but in a game its different.

Think of a digital camera where a 3megpixel versus a 6megapixel would have 2x more dots of ink after you printed it out on the sheet of A4 paper so ideally should have a better clarity picture (depends on camera etc etc)

Try lowering game to well bellow 800x600 and you see its all pixelated (squares) and will look like a commodre 64 or sinclair spectrum 48k gamming 😉

It will also depend on the size of the monitor you have. For example, 1600x1200 may not look that great on a 17" monitor 🙂

As long as the monitor can run it at a decent refresh rate, here is no reason 1600x1200 will look better on a 17" monitor than it will on a 21"; since the monitor is smaller the pixelation will be less noticeable.

I suppose you are talking desktop resolution here, in which case the goal is to find the resolution where you get the most desktop space without feeling like you have to squint to read stuff.

You get the same view either way, but with a higher resolution everything has more detial as it is made up of more pxiels. For insteance at 800x600 a guy way off in the distance may have a head made up of one pxiel, but with that same view at 1600x1200 that guys head would be made up of 4 pixels.

This is another way of thinking it: The more pixels you have the greatere the detail of polygons farther away. Instead of being just blocky and random at low resolutions, you can actually tell what it is at higher resolutions.

I find that higher resolutions helped me snipe much better in games where enemies were far away, than even at 1024x768. Where as games that don't need you to focus on objects far away, it wouldn't be as bad with a lower resolution.

EDIT: Yeah, like that guy said above me.

The point most people miss is that with a higher resolution on the same size screen, you have the choice of smaller text OR same size text with the characters rendered using more pixels. That's what the "screen resolution (dpi)" adjustment in Windows is for, to keep the text size physically correct at whatever resolution you're running.

The same font size will look drastically better at 1600x1200 than at 800x600, simply because each character is made from four times as many pixels.

the correct way of using higher resolutions is by pairing it with larger monitors
eg 1024x768 on a 17" and 1280x1024 on a 19"
you wont need to squint as the characters are about the same size, but in the same time you get more space

Back in the day though I used to run 1024x768 on a 14" CRT. I was kind of crazy like that. 😛

Can't remember...that was going on 8 years ago now. Might have moved up to 16 bit color by that point 😛
