screen resolution - reverted to the lowest resolution

I shut down as normal last night and booted up this morning to find the resoltion was on the lowest setting. Normally I have it set on 1280 x 1024. I found this morning it had set to 800 x 600. As if that was not strange enough the following happened:

- I did a system restore to yesterday and the day before and it did the same on the reboot.

- If I now move the screen up and down it ripples as if the refresh is not high enough.

Could anyone give me some ideas why it should be doing this? My OS is XP home

That can happen if you happen to boot up with your monitor turned off or if, for some reason your system didn't recognize your vid card correctly. If your system correctly ID's your vid card, you should be able to reset it to your preferred settings.

I believe this can also happen if your CMOS battery is dead, or for any other reason that the CMOS would reset.
