Posted this about 5-6 months ago, but I'm finally almost finished with my basement and I'm getting ready to order the components I don't already have. Not sure if any new products have come out that I should be looking at.

- Screen - I need an acoustically transparent screen, around 100". I'll probably buy the Seymour AV Center Stage XD pre-made screen. You can buy the material by itself, but I don't trust my screen building skills. Any cheaper, but equally well reviewed options?

- Receiver - 7.1 setup with at least 3 HDMI in and 1 out. Probably get the Onkyo RC270.

- Front 3 speakers - These have to be bookshelves, because I built a ~3' tall shelf behind my screen for them to sit on. Looking at Chase Home Theater SHO-10's (per vi_edit).

- Subwoofer - I'm not that big into bass, I just don't want it to be overpowered by my other speakers or the room, which is only about 1600 cubic feet, but open in the back to another 2500 cubic feet. Looking at Epik Legend.

BIC Accoustech PL200 sub goes nice and deep and can be loud, but you can control how loud you want it to be.

Gets some decent reviews and coverage on avs.

I replaced an old 8 inch 100 watt KLH sub that I had from many years ago, and it was a HUGE improvement.... essentially, it sounds like the earth is shattering in my theater if I want it to. my HT room is about 2000 cubic feet... (10x27 with 7 and 1/2 foot ceiling)

As for the screen, I dunno, I have an electrically controlled screen that came with my projector from Costco (106 inch), I would have preferred an acoustically transparent screen, since my speakers won't fit next to the screen, and they are much to tall to stand up below it, so I've got them laying on their sides right now...
Good luck finding one that suits your budget!

For your receiver, Any reason why you've picked the RC270 Over say, the RC260? Both appear to be 7.2 with similar power output and support for various modes, yet the 260 is a couple hundred bucks less... Just curious though as I'm not up to date on receiver technology.

If you use speakers that are not made to sit behind a screen behind a screen you may want to (depending on how far you want to go) put some kind of eq in line so you can adjust the sound.

These (bss 9088) are very pro and getting cheaper all the time. I've seen them as low as $500 so i think this one is priced a bit high.

This actual unit is way more then you would need but even a graphic eq adjustment across the front or simply a small boost on the high end could be enough.

Acoustic transparent doesnt mean acoustic neutral.

Audyssey MultiEQ vs. 2EQ. I've heard it makes a huge difference. That's really the only reason I'm considering the 270 over the 260. I don't really care about pre-outs or networking.

Have you considered the new Denon 2112ci? You can get it for $500 from a number of authorized dealers (you have to call to get this price). It's upscaling does not equal the Onkyo but it does have a much more advanced version of Audyssey room correction. It has 6 HDMI inputs and one output. It is also DLNA capable and supports Airplay, if you're into that sorta thing.

Note, however, that there have been some rumblings on AVSforum.com about an impending increase in the MSRP of Denon's 2011 lineup (pretty significant from the posts I've read). They are apparently supposed to take effect later this month.

There are some reports on avsforum.com that at least one authorized dealer (Electronics Expo) is now selling the 2112ci for $400 shipped. That is an incredible price.

Also, I need to backtrack on something I said in my last post. The Denon has a more advanced version of Audyssey but it is not leaps and bounds better than the Onkyo (I mistakenly thought the RC270 had just the 2EQ version, which doesn't touch your subwoofer settings).

Any more recommendations on a receiver? I've decided on the other items. I've been reading a lot about reliability issues with some of the Onkyo models lately (RC270 and the new RC360/370). I'm actually having an issue with my current Onkyo receiver in my living room, so I'm seriously considering different brands. Seems like Denon and Yamaha are the only other brands anyone recommends in this price range (under $600). I'm just concerned about image processing and Audyssey level really. I watch a lot of HDTV that's obviously compressed and it's nice to have a good image processor that can smooth it out. I also know I want at least Audyssey MultiEQ for the subwoofer tweaks.
