Screen message: USB port malfunctioned

I keep getting a message on my screen that a USB port has malfunctioned. A few minutes later there MIGHT be a message saying the malfunctioning USB port is now in operation -- or it might not. I click on the message and get a graphic showing the USB ports on my comptuer and that one of them is bad. I clicked on the thing that installs a new driver but then it says I don't need a new driver. What is going on?
