I just received my XFX 6600GT AGP after a long wait. I unistalled all my old drivers and used driver cleaner 3 to remove the tid bits. I installed the card and installed the drivers. Now I get an odd problem with games. Every so often my screen will go to sleep so to speak. As if I just turned my computer on standby. My tower still runs though. Even if I move my mouse or whatnot it stays asleep. Now it only happens at certain times. The only games I got around to testing were Doom 3 and CS:S. In Doom 3 it only happens once I die, and in CS: S it only happens once I spawn. Heres my specs.

AMD 2700+
XFX Geforce 6600GT
2x 256mb DDR 333mhz
80 gig Maxtor 7200RPM

Heres a list of some suggestions someone gave me.

-could be your card overheating, open up the case, put a fan next to it, anything to cool it down.
- Not possible, beleive it or not I don't have any fans. I stoped using them since we got central air conditioning.
-try underclocking the card slightly
- Only option I haven't tried yet
-up the agp voltage to 1.6v
- No luck
-disable fastwrites in bios
- No luck
-disable vpu recover in nvidia control panel
- Can't find where this is located.
-latest drivers for eveything, including mobo
- No luck

Note: Bolded statements are suggestions.

All temperature celcius.
My CPU socket is 48 degrees.
CPU diode is 51 degrees.
Case is 29 degrees.
GPU is 61 degrees.

try cooling - although not overheating in general, you may be getting a temperature spike somewhere in the middle of a graphics intensive operation [game].

Thats while not under load btw. I'm getting mixed reactions from diffrent forums now. Although they all seem to agree heating is probaly the problem. Is there any way I can check the temperature of my GPU while in game before the crash?

have you got any software provided by the mobo manufacturer on their cd that might do this? Usually you get cpu temps, but not sure about agp..........

you can get a cheap pci graphics card fan that would do the trick.
You might be able to try a benchmarking yoot like 3dmark, that might show temps, and you might also be able to crank up the i/o [i dunno, never used one]

Just want to get your guys opinions. Somone suggested I get 2 case fans (I currently don't have any). He said it would cool my case down and my GPU would be able to cope. Always nice to get a second opinion.

Your case temp is way off. There is no way your system temp is 29c and your CPU is 51c and the GPU is 61c. Your sensor must be in an odd place. Your system seem to be running hot anyway...my CPU rarely goes over 43c and my system temp is 35c and GPU runs at 32c...this is all while under extreme load for 3-4 hours.

A 20c temp between the system and the CPU temps leads me to think whatever you use to report the temps is inaccurate.

You definantly needs case fans. Why in the world would you have a system with no case fans??? Not even an exhaust fan in the back? Most computer cases come with at a minium one fan. Ihave never seen any case with 0 fans.

I used Mother Board Monitor 5 for my case/CPU temperature. I'll check my temperature in my BIOS to double check.

I checked in my BIOS and it also tells me my case is 28 celsius. The only fans I have in my whole system are 2 on PSU, one on my GPU, and one on my processor. Theres none in the actual case.

I added 2 80mm fans to my case. The temperature change is VERY minor. In fact, I notice nearly no diffrence at all. I've also opened a window in my room to try and freeze it over as well as open the side of my case completly. Yet, no change in temperature.

You do have the power cable plugged into the video card right? And what kind (both brand and wattage) is your power supply?

It needs to be at least 350watt "high quality".

let us know

I have a 350 watt Enermax.

I didn't think I needed an extra power cable plugged into the card unless I planned on overclock (as the installation book stated). The card itself works, it just crashes. The short time it runs the games it high excelent quality.

use some elastic bands on your fan with some string and wireties to fix somewhere to make the fans cool down your vga card. No point in having fans if the temp difference isn't where you want it..

In other words - MOD IT

My GPU is now at 48 degrees celsius.... but it should work at stock temperature imo. I just reformated and I still crash which proves its a hardware issue. Could it possibly be the card? Should I RMA it?

What do you mean you don't need it? You do have a power plug from your power supply going into the end of the video card right?

that is not there for looks or for 'overclockers' only. That is there for the card to draw the extra power it needs that the AGP bus cannot deliver. AGP versions of the 6600GT MUST have the 4-pin power plugged into it, whereas the PCI-E cards don't have that plug.
