Hey guys. Just recently my computer has been booting up to a black screen when my windows log in screen should appear. This only happens once out of every 10-15 boots, but it concerns me because i dont want it to lead to future problems. I have not had this problem before SP2, but i have made many changes to my system since then also. It seems since my changes i have had many video problems.

My system is as follows:

MSI KT3 Ultra 2 mobo
AMD athlon XP 1800+
WD 20GIG 7200rpm on IDE1 Master
Philips 52x CD-RW on IDE1 Slave
WD 40GIG 7200rpm on IDE2 Master
CD-ROM drive on IDE2 Slave
640mb DDR pc2700 crucial ram
GeForce FX5700 Ultra 128mb DDR3
430 Watt PS "Award" (generic)

Nothing is overclocked. The system has been VERY stable since built around 2 years ago, and i have never had to do system restores or loads of last good config until these very recent problems.

The recent changes on my system were a BIOS upgrade, to the newest BIOS available on the MSI website. AND the power supply is also new i took from some $30 case, because my old one was starting to go, which was a 300w generic.

Also, what are the most stable settings for my video card in my BIOS? I have fastwrites on, and all timing and driving are set to AUTO.

When was the last time you updated your video card drivers? It sounds to me like it's yer GeForce that's doin' it to ya... When yer monitor boots to a "black screen," do you mean the monitor is on (green light) and is just showing black, or that it went into hibernation mode like its not getting a signal? (It would help to know how old y9our monitor is). If possible, try using another monitor and see if the problems stop. Try updating your graphics drivers first, and if it still does it, experiment with switching out the card and the monitor (seperate times) if possible.

Did your problem begin when you changed (AND the power supply is also new i took from some $30 case, because my old one was starting to go, which was a 300w generic.)?

I have the most current Mvidia drivers (ref) 61.77

My monitor is actually on, i have a solid green light when this happens.

I dont think the power supply is the culprit as i monitor its voltages often and they are very flat line and very close to spec.

It may still be the culprit even if the voltages read normal. Did the problem start when you switched out the PSU? Or, do you have another computer you can test your monitor/graphics card on?
