Screen gets wavy when click on "Advanced Display Properties" with 8500

Every time I click on "Advanced" button on the Display settings tab, the screen gets wavy for 2-3 sec.

Also the "fast writes" are always shown as off. When I click on "detect" the flag goes to "On" but turns off after reboot. I thought Cat3.0 was supposed to fix the incorrectly displayed "fast writes off" status.

I got a brand new 2k SP2 DX8.1 install with Cat 3.0, KT266A, (Edit: via 4.43), retail "built by" 8500/64

The screen distortion happens with many graphics cards. Apparently drivers are redetecting attached monitors at that moment. Some monitors can't display a picture and transfer PnP data at the same time and go completely dark, some just show interference symptoms from the strong data signals moving on the same cable.

I read that FastWrites does not affect Radeon cards, so let it be off...
