Screen flickers when I click video files

This has been happening since I switched to my Dell LCD from my Compaq CRT.

In explorer, if I left-click/right-click on any video file, the screen flickers once. It's no serious matter but it's still annoying.

Some things come to mind:
- Hard drive fragmented
- Low / overloaded page file
- Monitor refresh rate not syncing with video files. Try changing it to different values and see if it fixes it.

I have this too, actually. It's not refresh rate, or drive fragmentation. IIRC, it's some video codec, but I can't recall which one. I fixed it once on another system of mine thought.

none of the things that 2xtreme suggested should have any effect. this is a software thing, not a perfomance issue.

How did you fix it? Seems to affect all avi files. I should check the codec that they're all using.

This happens to me as well.. I posted about it a little while ago. Except the blinking happens on my 2nd monitor, not my primary. It's annoying to say the least. Also, for me this happens for all video files (wmv, mpg, avi).

I had the same problem a while ago when updating to some new nvidia drivers and figured it out. I can't find the post, so I'll just show you how to fix it

The problem is caused by the "PlayOnMy" shell extension that nvidia drivers add to your registry for Avi, Mpeg, and WMV files. This adds the 'Play on my Tv' option to the list when you right-click these media files.

There's no easy way to remove them without running regedit (that I know of), and you will have to do this every time you re-install nvidia drivers.

So, here's what to do:

1. Run Regedit
2. Press f3 and search for "PlayOnMyTV"
3. Erase all instances of "PlayOnMyTV" -
I saw them specifically in: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\AVIFile\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\PlayOnMyTV
Erase only te "PlayOnMyTV" folder/key/whatever it's called. You will have one of these for each movie type.

Nvida are idiots, it's a disgrace they do this without our knowledge... I thought it was my new computer, and or my new monitor.... this forum saved me countless of hours taking everything back to the computer store and having them look for a problem.

Shame on your Nvidia !

I did notice a slowdown in right-clicking movie files when I upgraded from 2000 to XP, but I just figured it was XP's fault. There was no flickering though.

I am kind of surprised there is no option for this in the nView control panel. I disable all the rest of those features which seem to just slow down Windows, but there is no checkbox for "Play On My" anywhere. There really *should* be, because I don't want that context menu handler.

Deleting the PlayOnMy registry keys from AVIFile, mpegfile, and WMVFile really does make a noticable speed improvement for when you right click on the file. The context menu appears instantly again, just like it should.
