Screen dimmer / brightness reducer

I'm wondering if there is software that allows you to manually and quickly reduce the brightness of your monitor.

I understand that I could manually reduce brightness with the physical keys -- but that takes far too long with the menus and sub-menus on my monitor (Samsung 2333sw).

I also understand that software that dims or reduces brightness may not actually reduce brightness (i.e., power output), but may only make the screen darker. I need it to reduce eye strain when I'm working in a dark room.

I tried an application called "Power Dimmer," but it doesn't serve my purposes. It functions as a screen saver. In other words, it won't work if I'm using the computer.

Final note: I know that this program exists for OSX. It's called ScreenShade, and does exactly what is described here. Anyone know of an option for XP?

If you haven't already looked, try your video card's driver software. I know in ATI's Catalyst Control Center, there's sliders for brightness & contrast.

You could also try installing the Apple Boot Camp drivers, that will let you use the function keys to adjust the volume, brightness, and to play/pause/rewind/forward things.

At least I think it should work, the only PCs that I have tested it on have Apple keyboards thus far, so no guaranatees.

It depends on your graphics card. As mechBgon said, ATI cards have this feature. I'm not sure though about nvidia's.

I just checked on my Nvidia card's control panel and it does have the option to change the brightness and contrast levels. The option exists under Nvidia Control Panel > Display > Adjust desktop color settings (there are sliders for brightness, digital vibrance, contrast, image sharpening and gamma).

oh, that's good to hear.

@LiquidSense

Install the Magic something software for Samsung monitors. As far as I remember it does have a slider panel for brightness adjustment. Just a heads up!

Thank you everyone for the insight.

The on-board video processor that comes with my system (Shuttle G31 barebones) is the Intel GMA 3100. I am able to open up it's control panels by right clicking on the desktop. And I am able to create "schemes." One would think that I could manipulate the various video controls in each of the schemes, but I cannot, for the life of me, figure out how to save the changes to each respective scheme. I have tried everything, and it seems like there is some sort of bug. Oh well.

@oreca -- It looks like Magic Tune is indeed the software that I need for this monitor. Unfortunately, for some reason, I get an error popup that states that the latest software is not supported by my system. The message further indicates that I should email Samsung with my specifications. I hope that works!

Thanks again to everyone.

What OS are you running, and have you tried installing the BootCamp drivers? It will work on a regular PC, I had it running on my desktop before I even hackintoshed it.

@TheStu

I forgot that you mentioned that. I am running Windows XP Pro. I mentioned that I was running ScreenShade on OXS, but that is on my Macbook Pro. I am talking about a separate system (Shuttle G31 with Intel GMA 3100), so ScreenShade will not work.

Edit: I just realized that you must be suggesting to install the Bootcamp drivers even where I don't have OSX on this particular machine. Right? Will that work? I guess I'll give it a shot.
