Radeon 4850 running on a Q6600 Vista64 machine w/ 4GB RAM.

A few times over the last week, I would be browsing in Opera 10.01 (latest) and the screen becomes garbled. It has been different sites - but it's always been while Opera was active. The last time was just Yahoo Mail so there's nothing tricky going on. I've scanned for viruses. The screen becomes so garbled that I can't see the cursor clearly but I can still see it moving. Random artifacts appear, half my Start button/bar shows up at the top instead. I can't even ctrl-alt-delete. I try to go to task manager via taskbar right-click but I can't even see the word to select it. The machine beeps at me (believe it was a mobo beep and not a windows beep). I try the reset button on my tower and it doesn't respond. A few seconds later, the whole machine shuts down.

I turn it back on and there's no chkdsk or any other warnings.

What's the root cause of this? Can software like Opera do all this? It's affecting the whole desktop including systray icons, etc. Or is it my video card starting to go? I've already updated to the latest catalyst drivers and it still happened.
