I just switched out psu and motherboard to gamexstream 600w and a jetway sli board. Now all of a sudden there is a horrible screetching noise. seems like it doesnt really start until i get into windows then its pretty constant. I checked the hs/f and took it apart and even took off the fan while it was running but still this screetching noise. it seems to be coming from the cpu socket area. Any ideas? I didnt think a cpu could make a noise like this but when it didnt make it until it got into windows it seems like its the only thing.

It's the PWM MOSFETs and coils on the MB. These form the power supply for your CPU. When the CPU gets loaded (when you enter Windows) the power supply load causes oscillations. You can get the MB replaces but that is about your only alternative.

I had this problem with a x1900xt, turned out to be my power supply I changed it out the card stopped squealing/screeching. You have an extra PS you can swap out and test it with. That would be easer than pulling out the mobo I think.

EDIT: I guess the PS was not enough per line went from an antec 480 to an Etagen 530. I have stuck with Etagen ever since.

My rig: Gigabyte ga965p-s3, 2 gigs Corsair x2 ddr2 675, c2d 6600, 1 7200 sata, ati x1900xt, 2 nec dvd burners, Rosewill RP500-2 ATX 2.01 500W, has been squeeling when I turn it on in the morning - same location as you describe. I have just put it together after replacing a amd x2 3800 setup (with no squeel - in fact, i'm holding onto that board and cpu because I'm not entirely sure that amd is done just yet). It is not oc...... After it goes into windows, the squeeling eventually stops, and never occurs again while the computer is on - but, in the morning, it starts squeeling again.
I'm taking a shot in the dark that it's ps, and I just ordered a OCZ OCZ600GXSSLI GameXStream 600w, even though I think that's overkill. If it's not that, then its the board and I'll have to spend even more money.

Well even though for some reason it didnt make the noise when i was in there and took it off while running, it appears it was the fan. I just threw a 80mm fan on and its quiet as can be now. Although I have a AC Freezer 64 Pro on the way. Thats a very solid PSU filmore Its what I have now, I also have a Enhance 650w that i just got the 8-4 adaptor for but I think im gonna keep the OCZ in this rig and build a new rig with the Enhance later.

Well, as it turns out, mine was fan related too - cpu fan. I got home from work today and decided to really look close at what was going on inside the case as I knew it would start making that noise after being off all day. When I got down and looked while I booted it up I saw it was that the hs fan wasn't spinning up immediately. I then remembered that I had set in the bios to alarm if there was a cpu fan failure. If the fan doesn't run, the alarm sounds.

I have never ran across in a bios before for these settings regarding a cpu fan. I always assumed that a cpu fan always runs. Anyway the fan control was set to auto and I didn't like the fact that when I booted up in the morning, that it took that long for the fan to engage. Is this right?

I now have set it to "disable" and I feel kind of stupid for ordering a new ps when I ddin't need one. Of course, having never encountered this in a bios before (I never messed with AMD's Cool and Quiet) I had no clue that noise was a cpu fan failure noise.

Anyway, my 6600 ran at 40C idle according to the bios and Fan Speed. It now runs at 38C. This is with the stock hsf. I guess I'll install the OCZ ps supply when it comes, but really, I think the Rosewell RP500 was doing just fine if I wasn't running more than one hd and wasn't oc.

I have an issue like that with a Fortron PSU. It only makes that noise under heavy load. I dropped it into an old thunderbird system with a single hard drive and it's silent. Im my dual Athlon system with 3 hard drives and in my file server with 6 hard drives its screeches like that. It's not the fan rubbing either, as I tried starting the unit with the fan stopped and the noise still occurrs. On the affected machines, disconnecting all but one hard drive made the noise go away. Might be internal PSU components vibrating or some other weird effect.

Wont ever hurt replacing a rosewill psu with a OCZ, and that OCZ will keep your futureproof for a long time.
