screeching sound on start-up

Sometimes, when I start my computer I hear a loud "screeching" sound coming from my headphones. I can't find a way to turn it off, and it won't cease until I restart it. Even then, it can take a couple restarts.

My headphones are ath-a500's and my sound card is a chaintech a710.

It's not my headphones because the same thing happens with another pair. I found on the reviews at newegg that this is a frequent problem, but one reviewer claimed that updating to the newest drivers fixed it. DLing now.
