I have noticed, in rented movies, the scratches on blu-ray disks are significantly less than on DVDs, even on new ones. For example, I rented a DVD which came out on Redbox just a few days back, probably rested 4 or 5 times max and there were quiet a bit of scratches. Whereas whenever I rent a Blu-ray, even if has been a couple of months since it came out on Redbox, there were almost no scratches. My experience has been universal, all DVDs lot of scratches and all blu-rays almost no starches. Even notices this with the ones I borrowed at the local public library.
It almost seems like that are made with significantly different materials. BRDs are made with much tougher, scratch resistant material or coating, whereas DVDs are not. Now if there is technology available to make then scratch free why does DVD not use it?
