For a little while I was using those little spherical stick-on mirrors on my side mirrors, however after a week I decided they were more annoying than helpful, so I pulled them off. To get rid of the glue residue on the mirrors, I scrubbed them with naptha and a regular kitchen sponge. Unfortunately, the sponge managed to badly scratch the mirrors, making it hard to use them, especially at night. Is there any way I can polish the mirrors back to being clear, or is the damage permanent and I have to get some new ones?

The mirrors are glass and the reflective coating is on the back, either you had sand or something in the sponge and ground it into the glass for a while or you didn't remove all the glue - I'm guessing the latter. Give some windex a shot or windshield fluid.

Yeah that is what surprised me. How the heck did I scratch up glass mirrors with a kitchen sponge, which was new out of the pack. I thought at first maybe the naptha had something to do with it but I don't see how.
