There is no way in the world that you cannot make it right. take pics of the damage immediately. contact the police if you do not feel comfortable going directly to the owner. or call your own insurance company and let them advise you.
But, as I am sure you already know, you cannot just keep it to yourself. If it is bothering you now, it will only get worse. I have no doubt you will do the right thing. Just take a deep breath and do it.
On a side note... I worked my ass off for a car. It was not a gorgeous, brand new top of the line car or anything like that. I was a single mom, with no alimony, no child support and i refused all government handouts. We struggled at times, but we got by....
anyway... i worked my ass off for this car and i was proud of it. kept it immaculate, drove it carefully and what have you. I went to the supermarket one day and backed my car in a spot. In front of me, in the next aisle was a big ass pick up truck, with one of those tow ball thingies... well, you guessed it... they backed into me and destroyed the hood of my car. I only had liability insurance, so I was not covered. For the rest of the time that I owned that car... I felt sick every time I got into it... how hard I worked for it and how someone else ruined it and did not have the decency to make it right.
