Scrambled menus on replacement cell phone..

I put a sim card from my old tmobile phone that i ruined into a phone that my friend gave me and the service works fine, i can make and recieve calls. However, the menus on the phone are all messed up and sometimes the inside screen just wont come on at all except for the backlight.

The phone says cingular at the bottom so maybe it needs to be unlocked? Or is this phone not fully compatible with t-mobile? Its a motorola v180.
