"Scotty" was the man. Trek fans everywhere will miss him as I understand he was easily one of the most friendly and approachable of the original cast.

EDIT: Yahoo article has some interesting stuff about his life before Trek. He was a D-Day veteran, who was actually hit six times by machine gun fire.

My family and I met him at a Star Trek convention in the 80's when I lived in South Florida. He was a very nice person and provided some insight on his movie experiences while personally autographing his picture for my young son.
