Blue is very expensive relative to the flavor. Black and Red are MUCH better deals for the money.

If the 12 is any indication of its general style, then I would think the Yamazaki 18 would be a good choice. I guess technically not scotch
Many of the Japanese whisky makers went to Scotland to study the scotch making process in great detail. I have a nikka whisky 17 yr taketsuru pure malt (a blend of single malts) which is quite interesting. Much less expensive in Japan than in the us thoughIf you are looking for something a little bit more unusual, and very good, get him the Hakushu 12 Single Malt. It is a very good scotch type whisky that is relatively unknown in the united states, but still common enough that you should be able to find it in any major city, but you might have to call around a bit. Also, it should cost under a hundred dollars.
EDIT: Dur, I quoted IAteYourMother because like the more common Yamazaki Hakushu is a Japanese whisky, which is made in the scotch manner. The Yamazaki is a very good scotch, and if you choose that I would recommend you get the Distillers Reserve it adds that little extra (at little extra cost).
