Blue is very expensive relative to the flavor. Black and Red are MUCH better deals for the money.

Yeah, but buying scotch for oneself and buying it as a gift for someone you don't know well are quite different. Besides, even a half gallon of black doesn't crack the bottom range OP provided.

Blue can be had for under $200, at which point it's a great value.

Giving JW Black is a fucking joke, especially in a situation described in the OP. And I'll assume you were as high as a kite when you said Red, so I'll let that slide completely. A Scotch enthusiast - or any sane person, for that matter - would NEVER reach for either of those. Black is for mixing and Red is for stripping paint.

If the 12 is any indication of its general style, then I would think the Yamazaki 18 would be a good choice. I guess technically not scotch

If you are looking for something a little bit more unusual, and very good, get him the Hakushu 12 Single Malt. It is a very good scotch type whisky that is relatively unknown in the united states, but still common enough that you should be able to find it in any major city, but you might have to call around a bit. Also, it should cost under a hundred dollars.

EDIT: Dur, I quoted IAteYourMother because like the more common Yamazaki Hakushu is a Japanese whisky, which is made in the scotch manner. The Yamazaki is a very good scotch, and if you choose that I would recommend you get the Distillers Reserve it adds that little extra (at little extra cost).

I think MacAllan 18 is overrated (my father in law has a bottle he's been nursing for about 6 months), but it's definitely popular.

Many of the Japanese whisky makers went to Scotland to study the scotch making process in great detail. I have a nikka whisky 17 yr taketsuru pure malt (a blend of single malts) which is quite interesting. Much less expensive in Japan than in the us though
