A case of these:

I would go and choose Oban. Its a good single malt for starting out. Scratch that, the 14 now sells in the 70 dollar range.

What's a good "starter" whiskey? I'm thinking of taking up drinking it as a hobby since I'm not spending enough on Child's Play this year.

I figure I'll start with the basics, then work up to the $50-100 a bottle stuff.

My advice to those starting our drinking scotch is to buy and get used to the cheaper blended ones - Johnny Walker Red, Dewars, J&B, Cutty Sark. Once you get your nose ready and can can drink it neat, move on up. Careful, it's awesome, and it's pricey.

Awesome, awesome stuff. My wife mentioned that he's a fan of Oban but he's kinda like a foodie in that he stocks up on his old time favorite but is very much into discovery. Anything with a taste profile kind with Oban but perhaps more esoteric?

The best whiskey I every had was from the Middle East of all places. Wish I still remembered the name! Bottle was purple and very middle eastern looking. Not to threadjack
