I'm a 3rd year EE at LSU, I applied for a part-time, payed internship in my city as a process engineer/IT guy.

They emailed me saying come in tues. for an interview.

The problem is I'm very depressed have gained alot of weight (280lbs), and I just mope around my apt and sleep all day. I know working would help bring me out of my shell by having responsibility everyday and interacting with people daily. My low self esteem makes me afraid to show up let alone interview.

I've not shown up to interviews to 2 dream gigs before because of this low esteem/anxiety. Yes, I know I need to see a shrink and excersise, but this interview is this tuesday so no time. I get embarrassed because of my weight and I'm afraid they will not hire me because of it.

Anything you think would help me?

Yeah, get yer ass up on Tuesday and get the job. If you are qualified then you will get the job, that will help your self-esteem.

eat less food for the next few days, drink lots of water tommorow, saturday, and sunday, and then just a very little amount of water monday and tuesday. try to excercise. take your suit to drycleaning and make sure your shoes are polished. try to look spiffy. 280lbs isn't that bad, really. DON'T MISS THE INTERVIEW THOUGH. Get the job, you can sort through issues later, at least land the job. worry about the rest later.

edit: and keep in mind the new job means new computer and/or more money that equates to chicks. your life will change whether you're a fat boy or not.

You will go, end of story. I have a professor who is 25 years old weighing in at 392, yes, 392 and he just started a new diet and it is already working.

If you won't go on this interview, you better do something about your self esteem before you graduate. If it's your weight, then you better start dieting and hitting the gym, because it isn't going to get any better.

Go to the job interview. They don't care if you are a fat @ss. I was 280 too when I got my job. So what? Why does it matter to my employer if I sit in front of computer all day with or without a fat ass? Maybe down the road they'll care about worse health, but when you are young, they just want your fat @ss working.
A year later I settled down, started exercising, now I am at 220, lots of muscles. So I have a good job and I am in good shape.

Having a job does wonders for self confidence. 1 because you have money and 2 because you're at work so you can't sit down and eat all day...although I eat all day while at work. After I graduated I was feeling pretty worthless. It's weird cause normally in the summer if you sit aorund and sleep till 2 it feels fine cuase you know your'e going back to school. When there's no more school to go back to you feel kind of worthless.

That and chicks know when you have money for some reason...

You probably can't get over the depression on your own. Most people can't, and you've really got a bad case of it. Take my advice and go see a doctor. An antidepressant will help you tremendously. I didn't believe it at first either, but it really does work. I started feeling much better after just a week.

They won't care about the weight unless you have bad hygene. As for self esteem, well, that might or might not be a problem depending on your interview. You'll mainly hit two types at the first level. The first is the "do you fit in" interview. When I intereviews with Lockheed Martain we basically spent 50 minutes talking about nothing, and the last 10 minutes with some really easy technical questions. The key here is pretty much try to forget your at an interview, or you will be trying to guess how they will interpret everything you say and will get into trouble second guessing yourself. The other type of interview is the "do you know your s*it" interview. An an interview for Amazon.com the first two questions I got hit with were "In the compiler you wrote, how would you expand it to support generic types" and "How would you design a garbage collector for java?" First two. These can be brutal, but self esteem isn't as much of an issue here.

P.S., if you don't show up, at some comapnies your name goes into worse then the circual bin. No matter what, SHOW UP. Staring at the floor for an hour is better then a no show by FAR. Schools and employeers keep track of these things, so get yer ass up on tuesday!

think about it, what's the worst that could happen, they dont' give you the job, what it sounds like now is you already don't have a job.....what have you got to lose? if you can do the job, they'll give you a shot....an overweight qualified person has a better chance than a completely ripped, 7% body fat, non-qualified person eh?

go to your interview. when it comes time for you to graduate, the only thing that'll matter is work experience. get some work experience. don't skip interviews. i'd kill for an interview right about now. seriously. if you're adept at what you do, they don't care what you look like.

Yeah they really don't have to look at an IT guy much. Also try the GeekFitness link, you'll see it in a few people's signatures around here.
