got about 8 or 9 in total....

gonna use 1 as an astaro box, one as a fileserver...and going to give away the rest ....


What's really cool is that most of them had goodies like plextor cd burners, scsi tape and burners, and they are all at leat 700mhz iirc😀

I helped a buddy move a pitney bowes location and all I got was a bunch of used cat6 cables and free lunch.

The stuff they werwe tossing deffinately needed to be tossed. Who the heck wants a bunch of token ring stuff?

Help out your Distributed Computing members, they will get those things crunching in no time for AT.

I was thinking of using it for astaro but it seems like compelte overkill. I will probably sell my soekris, but don't think I need dual 800mhz p3s as a firewall..it would be a waste. Maybe I can use Procoder and send jobs to it if I use it as a fileserver/encoder:evil:

As per the other thread, this is what I brought home today from my friends house:

dual p3 866mhz /512MB RAM/ 40GB HD/ 1 extra onboard scsi controller / 2 extra dual ATA cotrollers, three NICs, scsi DAT drive , 300watt antec PSU, like 6 sunon 80mm fans....that will be the fileserver...minus two nics It has the capacity and the cooing for 8 HDs and I have more than that so we shall see

-going to get a p4 1.8 with three Nics to serve as my Astaro firewall on wednesday.....it doesn't have AGP and a really cumby m0b0 so it is practically useless for anythign else.

(I am going to sell my m0n0wall-based soekris box in a few days (128MB ram, 266mhz geode, 512MB CF card if anyone is interested )


It looks like msot of the PCs will go to charitable causes (a church) and I will give one to my uncle who doesnt even have one. For the msot part they were ~ 1-2Ghz p4/celey's and we got lucky with a 2.8GHz😀

will do. these things are junkers tough. Not worth much at all.

At least in appearances. I can make a multi hundred to multi thousand dollar piece of equipment out of them lickety split😛
 
finally got the server up and running; not sure if I will get anotehr box for astaro sicne the server uses so much power as it is😱

Damn thing is running beautifully using XP pro. I would've used linux but all my drives are NTFS and many already have a lot of data on them so I can't shuffle stuff around and format them in ext3🙁



That said, I am happy with the results. Network speed is about 70Mbps and I am using SMPseesaw to isolate processes since I will probably be using it as an encoder😀

In addition, using the DAT drive and some creative file replication, I will backup 3 computers' worth of critical documents onto the DAT drive😀

*I have an additional Tekram dc 200 RAID controller (ultraata100) but it can't simply act as a regualr controller for some reason. It never has🙁 It either at least JBOD or some form of RAID or the drives don't get registered.

**I was going to put in 2 more drives ( a 160 and a 250GB that I use as a PVR storage drive) but the PS in hter server won't be able to handle that much and I am out of controllers🙁🙁 In addition the drives are pretty quiet as is in my main machine so no worries.

edit: OMFG is it loud :laugh:
 
we used to toss out old servers, now we have to put them in a warehouse to rot.

i remember thowing away 2 sun sparc workstations... i'd take them home, but i already have a close full of junk.
 
That's awesome. I'm looking at buying some dual p3's from another forum for our (me and lizardth's) crack rack we are building. She wants more power for SETI. 🙂 I was donated a P3-600 yesterday, which is cool. Can't wait to get everything going.

You were partially correct. Intel had both P2 and P3 in 450 flavor. Why, I have no idea 😀
