I think we've come to the time when buying a new processor isn't worth the money for the marginal benefit it provides. I think RAM, graphics cards, and DSL/Cable modems are where the performance gains are at now.

I think we'll all top out at 1gHz until they provide games and applications that truly benefit from going higher.

Which is exactly why I have a Duron 600@950 runnin a web server, and a socket A t-bird 900 at 1150 running all my other stuff. This will be my set up for about a year. And I'm certainly happy with it...a faster video card is the only thing I can think of that would make it better.

That's true. CPU speed grows way faster than applications or games can, so basically it leaves everything in the dust. To boost your performance for what you have right now, memory is the solution. If you're playing games, a better graphics card will do (assuming that your motherboard takes full advantage of its features). P4 just isn't worth it right now.

uh don't know what you guys are talking about..Since I don't have access to a nice SUN station at school I am building a station to conduct all my analysis. Anyways to me at least I need CPU POWER since my program will take about a month or more to complete. I wish they hurry up with 2 or 5 gigs

I think the biggest bang would be in Hard Drive performance. Sitting for a minute while you boot up or while a game or even a level to a game is loading is where I want to see some improvement. How about ATA5000 with a 100,000rpm Hard Drive. All we would need would be scatter shields on our cases just in case it on went out of balance. Gives a whole new meaning to "My Hard Drive Crashed". People would ask "Wow, are you all right".
