Scissor Sisters: Ta-Dah

So by now you have probably heard the song "I Don't Feel Like Dancin'" from the Scissor Sisters on the radio. My wife and I had talked about what a snappy little disco number it was, so she went crazy and bought it yesterday.

First off, don't let the name fool you: this group isn't composed of sisters in the normal sense. A quick glance at the picture inside the cd cover will confirm that while the members may be sisters, only one of them is female (maybe). Not that any of that matters, but it took me by surprise.

The Scissor Sisters are trying to produce a retro sound from the 70's and early 80's, and they pull it off pretty well. If you have an occasional craving for disco (and who doesn't, even if you're afraid to admit it), then this album might be for you. SS takes very obvious inspiration from the Bee Gees, Elton John, Abba, and Blondie, among others. While all the songs could be classified as disco, SS apparently takes great joy in experimenting with different styles ? there are no two songs on the album that are real similar. In general, all the songs are upbeat like the first radio release, and sometimes have the added bonus of humorous lyrics. A few of the lyrics contain profanity or crude words, so this probably isn?t an album you would buy for young children. Don't expect to have to spend a lot of deep thought trying to figure out what each of the songs mean - they are fairly simple and straightforward.

All in all, on the first listen I liked the album, but I wasn?t gushing praise for it. This might be a good thing ? a lot of albums I really like on the first listen seem to get old real quick. I suspect that the more I listen to it, the more it will grow on me. I really liked the peppy, upbeat musical style, even though it isn't the type of music I typically buy. I can easily imagine that this will be a great album for road trips and other fun events where you want carefree, fluffy music that doesn?t make you think a whole lot.

Viva la disco!

This must be a new one. Didn't much care for their first one.

I had never heard of them until their latest radio release.

Meh, there's been a lot of new"new wave" stuff lately. some is good but most i find annoying for anything other than occasional background party music.
