I have many times. I believe that I will actually die this way, because even at 33 years old, when I get into this state it is very difficult to keep breathing. I try to moan to wake up my wife or get someone's attention (it happens frequently during the day, like when taking a nap), but usually end up waking up in a panic after what seems to be several long minutes of the state.

My wife had heard on the radio it is a matter of a part of your mind not ready to go to sleep (it's still very active), but your body is.

edit: after reading the rest of the thread, does anyone know the current treatment for sleep paralysis? Is there any?

I use to get it quite often when i was younger... once you realize it's all in your mind, and that nothing is actually goign to happen, you can just sit back and enjoy it. I normally have a sensation of needles pricking all over my arms and legs, and of the feeling you get on a roller coaster.

Is it related to sleep apnea? My uneducated explanation is that you stop breathing in your sleep, then your oxygen deprived brain tries to wake you up with some bad dream.

Yeah--I experience it. Sometimes I perceive a loud roaring before I wake up. Used to freak me out, now I just enjoy the ride, but it doesn't happen much anymore.

I used to experience sleep paralysis, though I've out grown it since I've grown older. You are awake, and can even see if you open your eyes, but it is impossible to move, talk, and sometimes difficult to breathe. When I was younger this simply terrified me. There was nothing I wanted more than to wake up, and I couldn't wake myself. I would think to myself "OK, on three, 1, 2, 3, GO!" and nothing would happen. After a few minutes I would come out of it though. It usually only happened to me when I was dozing off or taking a lite nap.

From what I've heard, there is a part of your brain that essentially paralyzes your body in your sleep so that you don't move around too much. What happens is that this part of your brain doesn't "turn off" properly, and thus you stay paralyzed even though you are awake.

I experience 'the fall' occassionally. There's another term for it but I forget what it is. Basically, before entering REM sleep I will experience a falling sensation for a few seconds. It literally feels like my bed is no longer there underneath me and I'm about to hit the floor (like when a cartoon character realizes he's walked off a cliff--as soon as he looks down its a sudden plummet.)

This is a natural thing to feel and normally the body just transitions to REM sleep. However, sometimes the brain is a little more active than it thinks, and it interprets the sensation as an actual fall...making me bolt upright and WIDE AWAKE in bed...clutching the nighttable for support!

right. it's nothing more than that. it's just your dumba$s brain couldn't fall asleep when the rest of the body is shut down.. i had them several times when I was a kid. they're actually fun in a scary way..

It's called sleep paralysis. Part of your brain is more awake than the rest. Basically you've regained consciousness but the part of your brain that controls your motor functions is still asleep. So you feel trapped because you can't move or open your eyes.

It can be quite scary, and sometimes goes on for a while.

I hear if you try to wiggle your eyes back and forth quickly it sort of snaps you out of it.

One thing to try is self-suggestion. Try saying a phrase every morning when you wake up. Maybe tape a sign on your wall with that phrase. Or you could use a phrase off a poster in your room. Either way, try to have that phrase be the first thing in your mind when you wake up. Next time sleep paralysis hits, try thinking of that phrase, and speaking the phrase if possible. It may help you snap out of the sleep.
