My TiVo's recording the Farscape "chain reaction" 23 hour marathon, and Sunday's going to be the Babylon 5 movie marathon (they're showing all the Bablyon 5 movies back to back: "In the Beginning", "River of Souls", "Thirdspace", "A Call to Arms", "Legend of the Rangers") .. You just have to love the Scifi Channel :D

Cool, I wasn't that impressed with the first couple of episodes of Farscape and even stopped watching for awhile, but it got better fast, so to anyone who missed the earlier seasons they are worth catching.

I did the same thing with Stargate, stopped watching for a couple of years after the season-1 "planet of male chauvinist pigs" episode drove me away, so I'm looking forward to when SciFi shows the older seasons in sequence (eventually).

Give it a chance, as time went on John Crichton changed from a bewildered wimp into one of the toughest mofos in the uncharted territories. It's not as good as B5, but it's better than any recent Trek show.

In addition to showing the old episodes, the Sci-Fi Channel will begin airing Season Six of Stargate: SG-1, starting with a brand new episode June 7, 2002 (just a week away!)

Unlike the Showtime episodes, these will be in widescreen, letterboxed format. Yayyyyy!
Dunno if the Stargate will be stretched into an ellipse. ;)

Farscape is the best science fiction show on TV right now. Enormously better than 'Enterprise' and 'Andromeda'.

Farscape is great, I love it. Seen every episode. I should check out Stargate. Never watched B5. Andromeda is decent but I stopped watching it. Enterprise is a bit better than Andromeda and I've seen them all.

Never watched B5
Do yourself a favor and make it a point to rent/buy the B5 dvds! I thought it was perhaps the best sci-fi series ever created for TV. (here come the Trekkies to kick my A$$ now) :Q

I've been reading "real" SF :) (books) for 20 years and I'd agree it's the closest to real SF that TV has come, except for scattered episodes of other shows written by SF authors ("City on the Edge of Forever" = Harlan Ellison, Ursula K. LeGuin wrote a Blake's 7 episode, etc.).

The B5 multi-year arc of Valen, Vorlons and Shadows was a great homage to the Arisia - Eddore war in EE Smith's Lensman series.

I've never read the "Lensman series" I'll have to check them out! Have you read David Brin's books Earth or his Earth Clan novels? Great mix of hard sci-fi/adventure.

I think B5 was the best SCIFI series also.....too bad about the B5 game a while back. If anyone may remember....Sierra dumped the B5 game in favor of a RODEO bull riding game. LOL

The only bad thing.... I thought the dealings with the telepaths in the last season sucked. The rest of it was great especially the final episode.

Farscape = Hot alien women. :D

Someone smack me with a trout or at least put it in my pants so those hot alien women will be impressed.

Yup, I've been reading Brin since Sundiver and the "Postman" short stories in Asimov's SF mag, all good stuff.

The Lensman series by Edward E. "Doc" Smith is "golden age" SF and the first volume in the series was published in 1938. It's available as a combined edition from the SF Book Club. The trade paper editions I have include endorsements from JM Straczynski, Asimov, Stephen Baxter and Peter F. Hamilton. Operators are standing by to take your order :)

B5 is second only to DS9; at most, they are equal.

In my opinion, B5 is so much better than DS9 it's not even funny. Complex storylines, subplots, character development.. My biggest gripe about the whole Star Trek thing is that the aliens aren't alien.. they're people with rubber faces and bone ridges. The Vorlons and the Shadows, with organic starships, would go through the borg as if those ships were just sugar cubes.

Yes, parts of season 1 blew chunks (DS9's first season was awful), and season 5 was without some direction (haven't seen all of season 5), but the whole Vorlon/Shadow war was the best scifi ever on TV. The Shadows are the best aliens ever, and their starships were amazing..

Star Trek doesn't make sense. In TNG, Picard blathered about how "we've grown beyond the need for money", but in DS9, Quark's always babbling about "gold-pressed latinum", whatever the hell that is. Why is gold a currency standard in an age where "replicators" can just manufacture the (useless) stuff? So what's Starfleet all about anyway? Is it a military organization? They couldn't fight their way out of a paper bag.. They don't even have ships with native cloaking devices and decent firepower, even though independent Federation cloaking technology was introduced years earlier in a TNG episode. The Borg have been a threat for years, but the Federation doesn't have anything that can take on a Borg cube.. why not? (Janeway out in the Delta quadrant doesn't seem to be having any problems, so why can't the Federation do anything?)

And I got so turned off by all that Bajoran religious "prophet" claptrap that I sort of tuned out...

In my opinion (and please remember that this whole post is just opinion), Voyager is much, much better scifi than DS9..

And Babylon 5 is far better still.

BTW: The Lensman series is most excellent.. but don't skip a page or you'll miss some important space battle or something.. :D

Well said! and I agree also it's all just our own opinions :) To each his own, I was just being my normal pithy self with the crack pipe remark :D Thanx for the endorsement of the Lensman series too Astaroth33 It's just been added to my "must read' list.
