not just selfies, but myspace/facebook is a treasure trove of narcissistic behavior. Its like a perperual highschool yearbook except you control the content and try to make yourseld as popular (or reclusive) as possible

I must say that I'm still a big fan of the "I'm a Gigantic Whore" selfie, despite what this study says. :colbert:

Got a relative to finally delete me on Facebook. He posted yet another quote from someone famous, in regards to something political. Except, the quote wasn't a real quote. Called him "yet again I see you're a partisan hack who can't be bothered to vet his sources." I was deleted :)

I'll take 10 of the narcissistic, mentally ill people on Facebook before I want political trolls.

Reminds me of this: "Crossfit definitely isn't fight club, because the first rule of crossfit apparently is to never shut the fuck up about it".

 to the first part.

They're usually the same people.

Probably the worst are the psychopathic trolls that have taken the internet by storm. They find someone suitable for harassment on Facebook or Twitter and harass them and if they respond as they like they ratchet it up. There's been a few people in an emotional state that have off'd themselves as a consequence.

It's like the perfect psycho crime ... have all the fun of killing someone without having to dispose of the body.

By comparison, a selfie is almost normal behavior...

I'm not a very active FB user, but all I ever see when I log in is a bunch of middle-aged women patting themselves on the back for getting through their super busy days.

I had a similar situation. I added my uncle to my friends list after he visited from abroad. I then had a friend request from a cousin whom I think I've had about 15 minutes of contact with my entire life, so I added him against my normal judgement of "they don't go on my friends list unless they're an actual friend of mine".

He (cousin) then starts posting shit, like "foreigners are responsible for this kid's kidnapping". I was curious about it (partly because the picture looked like artwork rather than a photo), so I googled it. Enough results came up labeling this as a total hoax posted by some racist organisation. I posted one of the results to him, and he deleted my comment.

A short while later, he posts some more shit like this. I unfriended him straight after that. If he ever calls me out on it, I'll tell him straight why he's an arsehole. Relations with his end of the family are a little strained so I didn't call him out on FB first.

Something I heard recently was that a load of women tried an experiment where they changed their name on Twitter to something male instead as well as their avatar. The tonne of abuse they were receiving for what they were posting (a lot of what they were posting was related to feminism, some trans as well) dropped to zero.

Add that to the list of "least surprising things" right next to "water is wet". Self absorbed people want to take pictures of themselves and have others look at them... how is that not obvious?

I deleted my FB account a long time ago. I caught myself spending time and effort, thinking and deciding on which friends to keep and which to let go.

I thought to myself; "wait,.. what?"

And, I promptly deleted my account.

My friends are people I see in person,.. not who I have on a list on the internet. Which, by the way, said list makes you the product, not the customer - stop letting them use you like that.

Well in some ways this very site operates a bit like Facebook and Twitter in that most of us know a good many here only by the things we post.

But, the idea that all my "friends" need to know when and how large my last bowel movement was is kind of pathetic. There are no doubt some pluses to social networks like FB, but for the most part is caters to the narcissists and permits business and governments to strip mine your activities for their purposes.

But, getting back to selfies, the fact that many of the images from selfies wind up on FB and Twitter is hardly a surprise...

I don't think girls realize where that ugly duck face came from. It started with fat girls doing it to suck in their cheeks in an attempt to make themselves look thinner. Which may or may not slightly help a fat girl but it definitely makes any other girl look horrible. But like dumb girls they all have to jump on the band wagon.

There are a few women on my facebook who non stop post selfies. Drives me nuts. How much freaking attention do you need?? I also notice that they almost never comment on other peoples pages. All they do is take take take. Want everyone to comment on them but never gives anything back. Eventually they end up with 500 friends but only a couple comment anymore. And the girls never realize why I'm sure. That just screws them up more and they crave even more attention.

I don't do selfies but I'm a huge fan of #12 personally. Hot chicks should definitely keep doing that.

I use FB to reconnect with friends in far away places and it is very useful for that.
