from BBC News:

"Scientists have found a sub-atomic particle they cannot explain using current theories of energy and matter.

The discovery was made by researchers based at the High Energy Accelerator Research Organisation in Tsukuba.

Classified as X(3872), the particle was seen fleetingly in an atom smasher and has been dubbed the "mystery meson".

The Japanese team says understanding its existence may require a change to the Standard Model, the accepted theory of the way the Universe is constructed. "

That is really cool. :) I just hope they don't create another big-bang. :Q

Right, we should stick with the prevailing view regardless of new data.

why cant they? if new evidence is found that warrants a new model, they should embrace that model instead of hiding back in the shadows. how else will we advance?

Now do you see the perils of modern science? Scientistst just can't agree on one thing or theory, yet we are supposed to believe in everything they say. Kinda rediculous and hypocritical if you ask me. Now if there was only one source of information regarding everything from science to humanity, that would be super. Wonder if such a thing exists?

-Praise The Lord.

uh how is this a peril? the willingness and ability to adapt and evolve as new information is acquired is a GOOD THING. i'd rather have a changing, but more accurate source, than an unchanging, but inaccurate one.

string theory.

Its a self fulfilling prophecy :)

When new stuff pops up, we create another dimension to explain it.

A more detailed account of what's going on can be found on Fermilab's website here.

This could be a missing charmonium state or this could be the first known example of a "meson molecule." In either case, this work will lead to a Nobel Prize in Physics, especially if the latter.

FWIW, there are many different acceptable interpretations of quantum theory, so you're free to choose whichever suits your intellectual palate. This is no more quantifiable than any of the others.

Read the article.
It doesn't fit into the STANDARD MODEL. The standard model is believed flawed because it doesn't account for gravity. String theory is not an accepted model yet because none of the particles it says must exist have been found.

This may be one of the sparticles that says must exist with string theory. They were believed to be too heavy to see using current technology.

forgive my ignorance, but what is a meson molecule?

Who says everybody has to agree on a single thing or theory for progress to be made?

Now do you see the perils of modern religion? Christians just can't agree on one thing or theory, yet we are supposed to believe in everything they say. Kinda rediculous and hypocritical if you ask me. Now if there was only one source of information regarding everything from science to humanity, that would be super. Wonder if such a thing exists?

I went ahead and fixed that for you.
