LONDON, England (CNN) -- Scientist and author Stephen Hawking is "very ill" and has been hospitalized, according to Cambridge University, where he is a professor.

I know most ATOTers don't venture into P&N - I don't even know if this is posted there - but I did think that many ATOTers may be interested to know about Dr. Hawking's health.

The article doesn't say much, but from my understanding it is remarkable that he has lived this long so any illness may in fact be quite significant.

"Hawking has survived for more than 40 years since his diagnosis."

Yeh, that is quite amazing.

Is it bad that this came to my mind when I read this thread title?

Ran into him in Oxford a few years back while he was taking pictures with some students who just graduated.

Yes, but I'm in the same boat for :laugh:ing, woops did it again. :D

Bringing it down yet, yep... He has been an amazing survivor, and he never let it limit him one bit either. I'd say he beat it in some way, though left permanently incapacitated/disfigured. Never gave up in his head.

And I don't take as much time trying to understand his legacy of astrophysics theories, they just strangle my brain.

Don't feel bad. The first thing I thought of was the crippled guy from Family Guy that is patterned after Hawking:

"Oh yes. Oh yes. Hit it right there. Spit in my mouth."

He has suffered for so long. I wonder if they have made plans to preserve his body or mind when the inevitable happens? I hope he recovers and stabilizes nonetheless.

I hope he gets well.
In addition to his contributions to physics and science in general, I always remember him for stealing Homer Simpson's "the universe is a donut" theory :p

He should have switch to neuroscience when he was diagnosed - probably could have cured himself by now.

I want all of you who are making fun of him to think about how easily this could have happened to you, and then go around hugging everyone you love.
