I had one for a month in the bedroom. Sent it back and went back to a regular digital box. It really is crap compared to the Tivo in the livingroom. Gotta save up for another Tivo.

I think I have the Scientifi-Atlanta or I could have the Motorola (if they make one). I have Time Warner Digital Cable so I'm not really sure which one they use.

SA

I think I have one with Time Warner Cable. It's pretty good, though I liked my Tivo much better.

How is Tivo much better? for only $4 a month, I get a real nice DVR, and I have no equipment to buy.

I just can't justify the cost of a PVR/DVR/Whatever. Purchase + subscribe. Bleh. :(

Have two in the household, one of which at least I know we can't live without (the one in my bedroom.) With the lag displayed in changing channels, or hell, issuing any commands to the unit, its PC underlyings are pretty apparent. It still has some work to be done on it, but i'm sure after it gets a few revisions it'll be even nicer. The dual tuner feature is especially nice to have.

Tivo couldn't even compete with the abilities of the SA unit when it comes to using digital cable. Let's see Tivo:

1) Allow fully integrated control of the channel changing (as opposed to the IR relay stuff)
2) Let you watch one show and record another at the same time on two different channels
3) Let you record two shows simultaneously, on different channels, while watching a third that has already been recorded
4) Get its programming guide without a phone line
5) Be covered/warranted by your cable provider. IE: When it breaks, who cares, swap it for a new one at no cost to you

Granted, I have heard that the interface on Tivo is a LOT nicer and much more responsive to input.

1) The SA DVR is just as slow to change channels. Not to mention the guide sucks and it has ZERO features.
2&3)I have 2 tvs. Actually I have rarely gone into the bedroom to watch another show when I'm recording something. I guess the stuff I like just isn't on at the same time or I just don't watch that much TV.
4)Network adapter :p
5)Ugh. The less contact I have with Time Warner the better. I agree that it sucks with Tivo that you have to both purchase the unit and pay for service...but I'm payed off with lifetime, so it doesn't really concern me.

You make some good points, but they really are negated by your last sentence. Once you've used a Tivo (or even a ReplayTV), you'll realize just how much the SA DVR sucks. I got rid of mine, I didn't think it was worth $8 a month.

Unfortunately, Tivo's business model is going to be it's downfall. I really hope that the cableco's pick up the technology and use it to their advantage as DirecTV has. But I doubt it. :(
