Science Fair Project Suggestions

Any suggestions for an elementary school science fair project? My daughter is in second grade, and I was hoping to get some unique and creative suggestions.
Hmmm.....this should get interesting.....

Do some research into meddling parents that do their kids' work -- I hear there's interesting stuff to discover in that field! 😉

I did a magnetic levitation train. I just used poster board and cut out a track and lined it with magnet strip. Then i made a little train that kind of straddled the track and it had magnetic strip on the bottom of it. Looks pretty cool when its levitating

If this is a serious request, I would suggest a magnetism experiment.

One suggestion is to wrap the cardboard roll of toilet paper with some insulated wire, then take off the roll so that the coil remains. About 20 wraps would be sufficient. She would then suspend a needle or small nail from above into the coil. You need to hook up a couple of D cells with a switch for her to turn on. When the current turns on, the needle will align with the magnetic field. When off, the needle will turn randomly. You can then have her explain the needle principle and the magnetic field.

An alternate version would be to dump the needle thing, and use a compass to do the same thing (except at the ends of the coil).

A small bracket could hold the string if the needle idea is used.

HTH 🙂

One year I did one about optical illusuions that was cool because it had kind of a psychological twist to it and it was different than all the other ones where dad strung up some pulleys or something. But second grade is kind of young, so you could just make a battery out of a potato, that's cool too.

My son did a project where he tried to predict whether something would sink or float in water based on the density of the material (oil, steel, etc.)

get a potato or lemon and see how it can light up a lightbulb

edit: crap, someone got to it.

how about.....I dont know...that was my best one.

The lightbulb is alot harder to do beacuse of resistance i think. I did one w/ a small LCD clock, that worked fine.

Sorry about that. Maybe next time kid!

That sounds good.

Maybe one of those LED things that light up like crazy that go on Cell Phone antennas?

Or maybe he can just stuff an M80 in a dead turtle and let her light it?
