For all of the resident sci-fi nuts in the house, here's your reminder that the Torchwood mini-series Children of Earth (aka Season 3) has started tonight in the UK. It's a 5-part series with a new part every night, so it will wrap up Friday and hopefully shed some light on whether this is it for Torchwood or if they'll finally do another real season.

For those of you not in the UK (or without access to UK TV feeds), the series won't start for another 2 weeks in the US. BBC America will be airing it starting the 20th, when BBC America HD launches.

Either Amazon has the wrong dates listed, or the BBC actually "gets it." The miniseries goes on sale on DVD and Blu-Ray next Monday. As in the first business day after the series finishes airing. And they're doing the same thing in the US; July 28th, the Tuesday after it's done airing. Getting the DVD our the door the next day is very well played.:Q

Anyhow, without spoiling anything, the first episode was every bit as good as I had expected.:)

They're doing the same thing with Dr. Who: Planet of the Dead which airs July 26 and Netflix says is available for rental 2 days later.

I must be watching too much news and spending too much time on AT, because first thing I thought of at the beginning was that MJ's ghost was coming to take away the kids

Probably should watch these. Series 1 and 2 of Torchwood alternated between really good and utterly craptacular though, so its not going to be high on my priorities.

Whats the verdict so far?

It's good. It's on BBC1, so they had to stop being so flamboyantly awful.:p

Finished ep 3, getting ready to watch ep4 now. This miniseries is the best of Torchwood so far, all packed and concentrated in ~1 hr eps. It's like they took Doctor Who and combined it with 24 (with somewhat less interrogation by a guy named Jack). I'm wondering if Torchwood will remain in this format for "regular" season, or go back to more serialized and predictable format with filler episodes (no major plot advancement in some episodes). I'm not missing the "human drama" with Tosh and whatshisface one bit.

EDIT: Russell T. Davies is an awesome writer, by the way. His stuff on both series' is brilliant.

Am I the only one cracking up at just how many times they've killed Jack thus far? Once in Day One, once in Day Two, and then two more times in Day Four. It's getting to the point where it's hilarious watching him die and come back to life.

Less hilarious however are the other deaths.

Jack needs to take better care of himself. Sure, he can't die, but why go through that pain all the time? At least wear body armor or something.

Getting ready to watch part 5. I'm hoping they end it well, it would be big disappointment if they don't; miniseries has been top notch thus far.

Well, we know he doesn't die permanently for another 5 billion years.

I really don't like how the series ended.:( I know RTD likes to let the heroes lose something in winning, but it's a particularly bleak setup. I guess season 4 is out of the picture.

It's also utterly amazing how dark the plot turned out to be. Kidnapping (literally!) to feed addicts, that's really, really dark.:Q

I didn't like the ending either - they should have at least asked the boy if he'd do it, have him say yes, and make the children look morally superior to the adults. I didn't like the pussy British minister either, or the rude American general, or any of that political stuff.

Overall pretty good though. Especially with the lack of good TV at the moment.
