Sci Fi channel will become "Syfy"

Dave Howe: See, we're going to change the name from SciFi to Syfy. It's not as geeky and makes us seem cooler and hipper!
Michael Bolton: That's the worst idea I've ever heard in my life, Dave.
Samir: Yes, this is horrible, this idea.

Good, maybe they'll give up the appearance of being the SciFi channel and someone else will move in and take that market segment over. Hopefully doing a better job to boot.

The name IS pretty stupid. But then again, no one liked it when the Nintendo Revolution became the Nintendo Wiiiiiiiiiiiii.

Battlestar Galactica is ending, and now this. Is this channel truly dead? Or will this new ridiculous name be the start of a new era free from cheesy made-for-TV D-movies and mostly lame original programming?

I believe they are convinced their target audience cares more about attitude and appearance than science or, hardcore science fiction. As long as their intended audience is 12 to 16 years old, they are probably correct.

Between that and Stargate, no more reason to watch the channel.

Well hopefully Eureka starts soon and the new Stargate episodes are decent otherwise that's about all I know of I watch on it since BSG is ending.

Not sure what the executives are trying to do with this channel, but it's become unwatchable in the last 5 years IMO.

BSG > OP

I still need to check out that show. Everyone raves about it.

With the last episode of BSG coming this week....what is SciFi going to have that's worth watching now?

Stargate Universe?
Caprica?

Maybe. I'm skeptical of Stargate Universe because I don't know how much more Stargate I can take after SG-1 and Atlantis.

Man, they seem to be intent on killing the Sci Fi channel 🙁

I miss the Stargate series, and with BSG ending, I really have no urge to watch anything they air. The movies are unwatchable.

It amazes me that their "SciFi Originals" can feature such amazingly bad CG. I walked through the living room yesterday and experienced the "priveledge" of watching Lake Placid, a SciFi original, with it's downright HORRIBLE 1998-looking CG graphics for their fucking reptiles - what a fucking joke. Those college kids that did that live-action Half Life short did with $500 what SciFi couldn't do with 50 million.

Exhibit A - right click fullscreen, it's definitely worth a watch and is in HD so it won't look bad maximized.

Fucking hire those kids to revamp ALL SciFi originals and you've got yourself a network worth watching.

Hmm, so they want to go from sounding geeky (which was good IMHO) to sounding like complete idiots. Epic failure. I wonder how much they are paying the marketing genius that came up with this one.

When we tested this new name, the thing that we got back from our 18-to-34 techno-savvy crowd, which is quite a lot of our audience, is actually this is how you?d text it,? Mr. Howe said. ?It made us feel much cooler, much more cutting-edge, much more hip, which was kind of bang-on what we wanted to achieve communication-wise.

What dumbasses compose this "techno-savvy crowd??" Perhaps the same ones responsible for crap like Ghost Hunters?

Well, the original Lake Placid was released to movie theaters in 1999. The CG crocs in it actually look better than the sequel...

Lake Placid II was a straight to video release from 2007 and I think that is the one you are talking about. That is what "SciFi Originials" are. Nothing but straight to DVD releases that the SciFi channels picks up the rights to because they are hella cheap.

Wow, this is just dumb. After BSG is done, I think I will be done with the SciFi channel. I don't know if I can muster the patience for Caprica.

They really should focus their core on the more geek/nerd crowd. Get better science-fiction shows and maybe even branch off into tech type shows a la TechTV (f G4).

They need to take the money they use to make those lame creature movies and spend it on a new series to fill the gap BSG is leaving.
I would rather they show scifi movies from the 1950's than the crap they show now.

let's be honest, though... the vast majority of the sci-fi channel has pretty much always sucked.

there have always been select programs on it that I'd watch, but I can't ever say it's been one of my base channels -- a station that I'd tune to when there's nothing else on.

I haven't watched anything on it since the end of the Invisible Man (that was a fun show)... all they've been showing lately are 20-dollar-budget movies I've never heard of.
