schools mail server

Hi
When im at school, I can access my email through outlook which is set up through an exchange server. When I am at home, I tried to set it up so that I can access it through POP. I have found out that the mail server is mail.scholswebsite.vic.edu.au, but I am unable to log into the pop server. Does anyone know if there is anything I can do to try and log in, like maybe they have the port changed or something. At first, I was thinknig maybe it was restricted to teachers only, but I used a teachers password (dont ask how i got it 😛) and was still denied access to the Pop server.

You may not post on our forums to ask for help bypassing your school's limitations on how their system is used. It is their system. They are the only ones entitled to set such limits.

They probably have the POP vritual server turned off (god I'd hope they do). They don't give you access to Outlook Web Access? Your best bet is asking your help desk, though -- that's what they're there for.

Yes I do have outlook web access, but Id much rather use Microsoft Outlook. I cant really ask them, because im pretty sure they would have told the school the ability to use outlook at home, rather than having a link on their website called 'home email use' that links to the Outlook Web Access. Im thinking maybe they have restricted this to the teachers?

Why not stick with OWA? Depending on the version, it offers up to 90% of the functionality of Outlook. Plus you can use it anywhere.

Nothing is lost by calling, and if you do, I'd suggest asking if they accept IMAP or RPC over HTTP (w OL2k3) connections, because POP sucks.

I just prefer having all my email in Outlook, its just easier. In your point that POP sucks, i dont use it in a way that I really notice that it sucks, I just use it to send and receive emails, but thanks anyways

You shouldn't be using pop3 to send email. 😕

And IMAP is much much much better than pop. POP sucks. Call the helpdesk.

Not to mention that you're setting yourself up to be screwed by trying to circumvent any security they have in place to prevent you from popping into the server. A quick check of current sessions or router logs will show your userID as active on that port -- a quick way to get your school account disabled for a while.

I can't think of any university that allows pop mail. I'd be freaking grateful if had OWA when I was in college. We used Pine until I was a senior and then they switched over to groupwise. Bleh!

If you really want pop mail, sign up for a free online account that allows it, and then set up a server side rule to forward all messages to that account.

Other thing is, does your university allow you to keep your .pst's locally instead of keeping it all on the server?

LOL, same here, but they never switched before I left. I remember when we got horde (or was it squirrelmail???) for webmail, everyone was so excited!

I want to use their POP to receive my email. Its not like I am trying to break any security to be able to use it, I just want to try and uncover settings that they keep from us that they use for their teachers to be able to access email through pop when not on the schools LAN

Again, they may have disabled the pop function. The teachers probably use OWA just like everyone else when away from campus.

Your best option is to talk to the admins to get access.

Im thinking they have a pop mail sever, because when I tryed setting it up in just Outlook, i was getting a reply from mail.school.vic.edu.au, but was unable to log into it. Also, when I set the SMTP as the mail.school.vic.edu.au, it was sending a test message, and when I would log into my email through OWA, I would see the test messages in my inbox.
