This case is so unbelievably ridiculous; I simply do not understand why whoever greenlighted that idea is not in jail. It also goes to show that American society values lawyers (a "parasitic" class who essentially produce nothing) over just about all else. It's disgusting.

Any family not involved in the case but have one of those laptops could file criminal charges.

Its actually more simple than that. What was done, was not a crime in PA when it occured(doesn't look like that has changed either).

It doesn't fit under PA's invasion of privacy law, it does fit under the wiretapping law, but it was the school district as a whole and the person who authorized can unlikely be charged with anything criminal.

Then you have the issue of criminal intent which even the US Attorney which usually tries to go on fishing expeditions, refused to charge because there was no intent.

Its a civil issue. No one will ever be charged with anything.

As for the settlement, litigation is expensive because discovery is expensive. The lawyers shouldn't be forced to eat the costs of discovery merely because of a settlement.
