School screws me over...

So I show up for acct class today 10 min early. There are 3 other people and no professor, so 5 min after class was supposed to start I elect go over to the office to see what the problem is and then come back and tell them.

I overhear one of the advisors telling another student from an acct class (maybe the same one?) say, "I'm sorry. We will not open more seats in an existing class or open another class. You will just have to wait till someone drops from one of these full classes and get a seat that way."

I think hmm this is odd... so I ask the lady about my class. She rudely tells me "go check the board outside the office." So I go check it... and there it says that my class is supposed to be a PM class not an AM class!!

Now I know when I registered for the class online through the new online system it said AM! My gf confirmed this (she was there when I registered), and apparently at least 4 other people did the exact same thing... so it was clearly not my error.

The other 4 sections are full (including the two that fit into my schedule) and I tried to get in to see my advisor and see what she can do about it, but there were several people in line ahead of me and I had to get to a class.

I did email the Prof of one of the other classes that are full (but at a good time) and asked him to email me back if a spot opens up.

Is there anything else I can do? Have you had this happen to you before?

I hate my school :disgust:

You got screwed. That sign wouldn't have been out there if the class hadn't been incorrectly labeled as an AM class at some point. I doubt there's much you can do about it though.

On the sheet they had another time for the class "5:30PM - 6:50PM" scratched out, and penciled in above it "8:30PM-9:50PM." So apparently they changed it more than once.

I thought it was 8:30AM - 9:50AM... which is strange for a Tue/Thu class which is why I double checked that it was AM not PM before I registered for it.

I may have one of the schedules copied from the web page to a word document... I will have to check.

That means going back up to school at 8:00PM after work (another 30 min drive in good traffic...), and no study time.

It would be possible supposing they give me no other options, but it would royally screw up my study time and cost me big $ in gas money.

Yeah, **** happens. I guess I can see what I can do... but I'll try not to get all bent out of shape over it.

check your records online does it show you enrolled in a correct section at the time you wanted.

If it is is then its departments fault not yours. Atleast that how it usually is. although back then the online registration systems were primative for, it is still the departments responsibility to make sure their info is correct. With the exception to teachers/room numbers.

worst case take this up to the department chair. If he doesn't listen and force the professors in the other sections to add you anyways then take it up to the dean of your college.

this is all assuming that the system still shows the AM time.

Do you need it now? Could you just drop it now and take it next semester?

The system now shows the PM time, so I really don't have any hard evidence... just what the 4 of us say.

I could take it next semester (I don't think it is keeing me out of anything) but Acct is one of the hardest subjects (esp for me), and it would really help to take them in back to back semesters before I get too rusty.

No, I am a JR.

Actualy they also put my gf's English class in a computer lab room... and the class is at the same time as the lab! The Prof said he would get a switch of rooms ASAP.

Hopefully one of the teachers will give you a spot. I registered for a Physics lecture and lab, two days before the quarter started, they cancelled the lab, so I was in a lecture class, but no lab. All the labs were full and had wait lists of 15 or so people on them and my school requires you to take the lecture and lab concurrent, so I was in a tight situation. The Science Dean, who was really nice, told me which lab professors to approach and ask for a spot in lab. One of the teachers took pity on my situation and let me add his class.

At my school scheduling gets fvcked up all the time, I think a lot of times it has to do with classes being too large for certain classrooms so they change time and place, also more people enroll than expected or allowed. Just go to the class everyday and keep trying to add it, thats what I have always done.

and all that will accomplish is nothing.

if the class is full they are not going to add him. it does not matter that it is there mistake. they are not going to do it.

You can't do anything about it. In my experience very very few college employees care at all what's happened to you and the ones who do care can't do anything if they wanted to. It's the way it is and you just have to be agressive about it.

The hard part is being properly agressive and not turning into an a.hole.

I admit I don't have much hope for it working out, but they might do something, considering there are several students in my situation.

Turn into a a.hole then. It takes an a.hole to do what they did. it's not like they care about you.

Just show up for the section you want to be in. After a few classes talk to the professor and tell him your sob story, or wait for someone to drop the course and pounce on the opportunity. Worked for me.

Don't understand the problem? You registered for a class and now want to try to get into another class?

Your school sounds all screwed up.

At my school you can verify your schedule online, and if the time was incorrect then an automatic e-mail is sent to all enrolled students usually at least 3 weeks before classes start informing them of the change in their schedule. That's service

Although we also have the overcrowded class issue in some of the more popular majors. Speaking of which, what IS your major? Accounting, business, etc.?

Information Systems

That sounds like an awesome school! We have all kinds of problems here. :(

I talked to my advisor when I got off work and she said that the only one who can open another seat is the Prof. so maybe my sob story email will work. If not I can call him and press the issue more.

Of course, I might actually like this class I?m going to tonight. In that case I might consider keeping it.

Decisions decisions...
