MY SCHOOL placed a 2 gig bandwith limit on internet access/month, thats both DL AND UL people. MOFOS are charging like 25 dollars a month too. wtf? can something really bad be done to my school? i would like to see that. bunch of assholes.

The bandwidth limit doesn't count towards direct p2p connects or peers on the same network.
My school has placed a bandwidth limit as well, and I downloaded well over 10gb within the past week. The school bandwidth meter only shows about 1100mb downloaded and 30mb uploaded when I've uploaded well over 200-300 mb

My limit is 2gb down 500mb up for a week. If I violate it, I'll be losing internet for the coming up week which blows

Get an apartment near campus. Get DSL or Cable internet. Pocket the thousands you save over living in a dorm.

That has been inplace for years now in all german universities.

In my school the students in the dorms usually just band together in small groups and share a commercial broadband connection instead via wireless router or LAN access server (computer labs old Pentium 166s running linux)

You don't pocket anything living off campus.
You have to pay electric, food, rent and other misc fees.

I guess it depends largely on the city your school is in, but I pocket roughly $2000 living off campus, paying half-rent (two-bedroom apartment), cable, internet, electricity (water and sewage are paid for).

Just ask people that live in apartments to get stuff for you.

You shouldn't be spending all day at the computer in the dorm anyway, its college. Have some fun.

It's nice to have the dorm experience, but get out ASAP.

Live in dorms at my school = about $500/month plus food
Live in HOUSE off campus with roomates = $280/month rent plus electric/food = waaaaay better deal.

Why? They didn't take it away from you, they just limited your usage. If you still want to go over, you are going to pay. Sounds more than reasonable enough. Either cut back on the file transfers or fork out the cash for the bandwidth you are getting for free. And don't give me the "my tuition pays for this" crap. You go out and spend money on a t-1 or even an OC-12 and see how much it will cost you per month only to have people leech illegal software, movies, music, etc.

Also don't give me the "need to download linux distro" excuse too. It's bull and you know it. You can easily get it in CD form for a small fee from of the Open Source sites.

when i was in college, my school didnt limit how much you downloaded, just severely capped your speed. Even though i was on a T1, i rarely got speeds 4 or 5 times faster than dailup. And they blocked every filesharing app, every non-essential port, etc.... It took all the fun out of the internet. Cant blame them though, bandwidth costs money-- and they've got a bunch of fools using it all up.

Do you know how they are monitoring it? IP address? Username? If it is by IP address, then just download the huge things on a computer lab computer and transfer them to your own system. They won't track file sharing inside the network most likely.

You are an IDIOT. Pay for your own damn internet service with another provider. If you're using school internet access to research reports or download historical clips, you'll never reach 2 gig. If you're downloading ILLEGAL mp3 files or uploading ILLEGAL software then you should be kicked out anyway.
