i dont think that is a good idea. part of the appeal of facebook right now is only people in school have access so it isnt filled with spam and too much stupid stuff. opening it up to the general public is probably going to make it annoying. i dont really care though.

It was only a matter of time before college aged women wanted to meet men with jobs to buy them stuff, instead of their broke male peers.

What's really going to suck is there's an un-hideable email field on Facebook right now in your profile. All a spammer has to do is sign up in your region and he can view any profile in that reigion (unless it's friends-only), and harvest email addresses.

It's not like my university provided email address is a spam free zone (it's anything but that), but it could get a lot worse if any random person can sign up now.

They should make that email field hidden or make an option where it's only viewable to friends.

Edit: I just looked - it might actually be that way now with the new privacy controls.

not everyone who is on there is currently in school. They just happen to still have an e-mail address with an .edu extension.

Damn, first stalkish mini-feed, now this...The huge appeal of Facebook to me was the fact that you had to be in a school (with at least a .edu email) to get it...

Oh the irony. Just logged into my facebook, and saw this...

"Since we started adding high schools and companies last year, pretty much everyone has been able to use Facebook. As the site grows, we're constantly adding more privacy controls like the ones we added last week in response to your suggestions about News Feed. You can expect to see more soon, but in the meantime we want to highlight some things you may not have known.

How do I control who sees my information?

* Show different information to different people using privacy controls.
* Hide info from specific people (even friends) using limited profiles.
* Make yourself invisible to someone on the site by blocking them.

Who can see my profile now?

* Your friends.
* Other people at UT Chattanooga.
* We will never allow any random person to see your information.

Who can get on the site?

* College students with a .edu email address.
* High School students with an invitation or a school email address.
* People can register for a company using their work email address.
* In the future, people will be able to register for regions. But not yet.

What does this mean for me?

* Probably not a lot since privacy has always worked this way.
* Still, make sure your privacy controls are set the way you want.
* If you have suggestions for improving privacy, send them here."
