Ok so looking at this UPS from APC it says it has a 5:01 hours:mins run time, yet in the more detailed documentation it says:

Typical backup time
at half load 23.9 minutes (490 Watts)

Typical backup time
at full load 6.7 minutes (980 Watts)

So is the 5:01 hours the run time when nothing is connected to the UPS? I sure hope not, because this is useless stat. Also, by full load they mean all plugs being used?

I am in a bit of a loss here, but I would appreciate some help.

Thanks.

Full load means max wattage. IE If you hook a bunch of monitors up to it, it won't last long. The time it lasts is strictly dependant on how much it has to keep running.

Just thought I'd add that I own several APC units 350va, and one Cyberpower 1500AVR (I love this one) which weighs a ton but is worth it's weight in gold so don't count out Cyberpower either.

Also consider ebay. I got a Smart-UPS 1400 from APC for $75 from there, shipped!

Does anyone that has one of these encounter the following...

When the power goes out for just a second or so, the ups switches to battery and then back to power.

but

If the power goes out for 5 seconds, then when the power comes back on the ups stays on the battery requiring a shutdown.

Is that normal?

that is not right, you should get that checked because it will eventually lead to the premature death of your batteries.
