I'd recommend carrying around a blackjack, but really I'm more concerned about mavericks than mountain lion.

Also:

All joking aside, a collapsible baton sounds like a good weapon to carry around, assuming you don't have license to carry around a gun or don't want to deal with a gun. Because that would be the obvious choice if you are very worried.

Pepper spray or a handgun or both. I've heard of pepper spray not working well but then again if you miss with a gun or hit its tail you might be toast anyway. They are just like cats and like to follow people (cant recall if they were on horseback, which could be the draw) from the tales I've heard. Normally you won't see them anyway.

animals don't like getting hit on the nose afaik.
Anyway I think they stalk prey so they'll jump on you and when you realize it it's too late.

I don't know what you are legally allowed to carry where you live. You'd better find that out for yourself.

A handgun is one popular option. A mountain lion is no bigger than a man so whatever you would carry for self defense would be fine. If it doesn't need concealed a .357 or 10mm would give excellent stopping power.

If you can't or won't carry a firearm, then get some bear spray if it's legal where you live.

Assuming you've already failed in trying to avoid or dissuade the mountain lion, I would think the biggest danger would be if it gets you by surprise, which is supposedly most cats' hunting method. In this case, I'd want something that passively protects you from a disabling neck bite and completely ends the game for you before it even starts. I don't know what would work for this, but a neck bite from behind/above I didn't even see coming would be my biggest fear.

Wear plate armor when you go out. It not only gives great protection against mountain lion bites, it provides a nice workout for the entire body to keep you toned.

Swiss Army knife. If you can't kill it with that, you're not man enough! ;)

By and far, a firearm is your best bet, if possible.

I seem to remember reading about something like this in the past after a cyclist was attacked. As I recall the cyclist was off their bike, bending over working on it or some such when it happened. One piece of advice was to make yourself appear as big as possible. Hold your arms out etc.

Here are some tips: http://www.theacorn.com/news/2002-09-26/Community/047.html

The other thing I would suggest is carry one of those can air horns. A loud blast like that will likely send the animal running. You may also want to carry a knife. If the animal does jump you, you need something that will do some damage.

Most real life mountain lions are scraggly underfed and weak (there are exceptions). Not the overweight and well groomed ones you see on TV or at the zoo. A four or five foot walking stick with a can of mace attached to it will be all you need and likely overkill. I've known people who will just kick or punch a mountain lion and they will go running. Smaller and easier prey is just around the corner - they will move on.

I figure most mountain lions would be scared of any person that doesn't try to run away.

We actually get a few small ones up here in NW NJ, but I have never seen one. I have seen quite a few bear, and I think the same general advice holds for both of them. Unless game is really scarce in your area then you are unlikely to be considered prey. As someone else mentioned there are easier menu options, and the cat has likely never eaten a human, or we would have heard about it. Encounters are probably an unpleasant surprise for both parties. Make yourself tall, wide, and loud. Don't run. If it actually comes at you try to kick it in the face, or hit it with a large stick, or something along those lines. As for guns, unless you're very well trained my bet is you ain't hitting a large cat with your pistol.

As with any wild animal or dog attack its all about making them pay dearly for mauling you. I know for a fact if the thing actually gets ahold of me (cat, dog, lion, etc...) I am going to jamb my fingers into its eyes and try my hardest to rip its eyes out. I'm positive it will change its mind about eating me when I rip its eyes out and then start trying to lobotomize it through its empty eye sockets.
