In Illinois this is automatically covered via your car insurance by law. No additional rider or expense. Not sure how it is with all states, so it doesn't hurt to ask.
This covers damages to car but not lost of income they can have for the days it out of commission. There seems to be no common credit card to cover this, least that's what I found.

I like to use my Amex blue for rentals. No particular reason, they just seem to have better CS, to me

Interesting. I never knew they could come after you for lost income on the asset. That seems to be a bit over the top as it is somewhat of an implied risk in regard to their business model? Also, if the accident wasn't your fault, they can go pound sand on that one.

Purely based on my local experience with certain locations:

Hertz is cheap and will get you by. However the cars I've rented from them have been older, and usually had a noticeable issue or two. They're old enough to have needed some maintenence, but don't seem to be getting it.

Enterprise is costly, but IMO it's easy to see why (compared to Hertz). All cars I've had from enterprise have been very new and nearly spotless. They aren't always worth the money, but if you want something new and clean that's the way to go.

I'm sure locations vary though, so it's hard to say this would be true everywhere
