I recently saw new computers this semester in the engineering library. I was kinda confused by the DVD-RWs that each of them had. Seriously, what could they possibly be used for in an engineering library?

Almost all OEM systems will come default with a DVD burner now a day.

DVD RW drives cost only a few bucks more then even the cheapest of CD Rom drives
More and more software is being released as DVD Rom's as well, so it would make sense to have a DVD-ROM.
DVD RW drives cost like the same amount as DVD-roms these days (maybe a few bucks more..) so it would make sense to just go with DVD-RW's as they are not an expensive upgrade.

Yeah, exactly, they don't need to.
$20 off the price over lots of machines = fairly nice saving overall.
Lots of school computers don't need a CD drive, so it IS odd that new machines come with DVD's.
You can't think it terms of home user activities and costs when you're not buying for the home.

The Library at my school, just let the student body know that they installed 25 new computers in the main computer center in library, bringing that up to 115 computers. They all have CD-RW, not sure about DVD-RW. They really push the idea of using USB drives to save your data.
