School laptop with emphasis on gaming/media

So I need a new laptop for school as transporting my desktop has become too tedious. It has to be mostly gaming, but with several options for school. That means it has to be windows, preferably 7. The main point is that it's for gaming, since nearly anything I can buy works fine for the programs I need for school. (Word, Xcel, SPSS, etc.)

I'm just unfamiliar with buying pre-built. I've been building my own setup since I was 12, so the idea of having something not entirely made by myself is iffy. I'm also unfamiliar with certain brands or their reputation. (MSi and cyberpower, mainly a lot of the ones that seem to produce laptops with most recent GPUs) Any input on how to narrow down to something that hits my pricepoint would be utterly fantastic and very much welcome. 🙂

Basic requirements:

Gaming, preferably something higher end.
Price point of ~1500.
I would like to have the option of an SSD, but I've lived without it. (I've not experienced it yet. 😉 )

I did some basic research and was considering a Macbook Pro refurbished for a while. I'm iffy because I know the hardware is slightly overpriced on the high end, but their warranty is fantastic as is the eventual resale value if I can upgrade to a new computer early.

I have looked at alternatives and found several interesting rigs that have combined SSD and HDD, which is very appealing to setting it up as a media/gaming device. (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...9SIA24G15X3967)

I just got this and I like it very much MSI Apache pro GE60 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16834152560

It's fairly lightweight and the 860M graphics chip is pretty decent. I use it mostly for RTS and CIV and Total war games and everything looks great. The only cons I have is that it can get a little hot but I got a laptop cooler for that. Many people complaint about the trackpad but I haven't had any issues with it.

I also changed out the 1TB HDD with a 512GB SSD drive.
