School LAN problems

Ok, I just moved up here to school, got everything set up. My Vista laptop connected right away through wireless and cable LAN, got the software I needed and was able to log-in fine.

My XP sp2 desktop will not let me online. I am connected wirelessly and through the cable. They both say connected, but I can't get to the login screen. I've tried everything and been googling for a while with no solution.

It doesn't make any sense. When I run ipconfig /all, the settings match. What is supposed to happen is you pull up the browser and you get redirected to a login page. But it just says, page cannot be displayed.

Any ideas?

Sometimes we have this problem as well, type in the login page's url directly into the address bar, this bypasses the redirecting process.

That didn't work either. I was having this problem at home for a few months and just went to using only my laptop for internet. It connects, but no internet... anything else? I have no firewalls running, no windows firewall or otherwise.

I understand what you are saying, but I can't even get to the log-in screen, so that shouldn't matter, otherwise no one else could log in either.

So? You can make it work exacty as you are describing. I don't know their security, but that sure sounds like what is going on.

I'm talking wireless at this point. Basically I'm wondering why I can't get anything going in a browser (IE, Opera, etc.). I am connected, but it won't let me do anything. I even d/led the Cisco Clean Access Agent program and installed it onto my desktop, but it won't let me log-in.

What did your school's help desk say?

What's the DNS server and Gateway settings for your school?

You obviously haven't listened to a word anyone here has told you. Like spidey said, if they only allow you one PC to connect, what you are describing is exactly what will happen. This isn't like your home internet where if you have a gateway address, it'll just work. If this is a school, they definitely have a filtering system in place so people don't abuse it or cause problems. CALL THE SCHOOL HELPDESK! If they say you can only have one computer registered, don't come back here and ask how we can help you bypass it. Just follow the rules that are in place, there's a reason they are there.

I understand and I plan on calling them today, but this isn't an issue of me having more than one pc connected to the network. It's wireless, so there are hundreds of other pcs connected at any one time. My issue is that my desktop won't even let me get to the log-in page. I don't want both online at the same time, but I'd like to be able to play games online on my pc. Like I said in a previous post, I couldn't even access the internet at home for the last few months, so it's def. something going on with the desktop, but I can't figure it out. I was only asking if anyone had a similar sitaution before and maybe could offer some kind of solution. I understand it's hard to tell if someone is computer illilerate or not on here, but I know a lot about this stuff, so there's no need to jump down my throat.

Why are you making the issue so confusing? Some schools have the network setup so you register the MAC address of your machine, and if another machine plugs into the port or connects to the wireless network it won't go anywhere. The fact there are hundreds of PCs connected at the same time doesn't matter, if you are only allowed one.

Issue: You can't get online with your PC.
Troubleshooting: tried two connections in different locations through different providers with another machine which worked.

When you plug the desktop in to any connection, do you get all of the necessary DHCP settings (ip, subnet mask, default route, dns server)? Can you ping your own ip address? Can you ping the gateway address? Any errors relating to network stuff in event viewer? Any issues in device manager?

You might know "a lot" about home networking. But university networks tend to be much more sophisticated - more sophisticated, in fact, than many corporate networks out there. Just acting like you're connecting to your little home router is a waste of time, which is why everyone keeps telling you the same thing - talk to your helpdesk.

Considering the problem began before school started I think we can rule out the school's authentication and networking rules for the moment. IT won't even let you ge to the authentication page which any computer should be able to get to without having the correct credentials...i would assume...and without the proper school ID# or whatever you need...then it would block you at that point.

I had a problem at home once where I was no longer able to browse any longer. I got a proper IP address and all the settings were fine I just couldn't browse. Tried for the longest time and ended up having to unplug the power cable, turn off the power supply from the back then plug it back in, flip the switch, and restart the computer. It acutally happened on two different systems of mine so maybe I am plagued....but before we jump all over this guy maybe its acutally his computer.

Exactly! I can get on any computer on campus, and any of my roomies computers and log-in. But my desktop has something going on with it where I can't get online. And I tried pinging my address and it didn't work. Could it be a hardware problem? But neither Wifi or LAN works, so idk.

If it is a pure computer problem these two pages might help.

However Mike2002, please visit this forum next Month (School Starting month).

You would see numerous amount of Posts concerning.
How can I open port for my p2p through School server?
How can I connect two or more computer to the School network when only one is allowed.
How can I bypass school Firewall?
How can I use the School network to stream video and music remotely from home?
How can I use my own Wireless Router when school does not allow Routers?
And much more??.

So as far I can see the OP is just the first swallow returning to Capistrano

Try reloading the drivers for the NICs.

Make sure you're getting all of the necessary information/settings from DHCP.

Just wanted to update you guys... I reinstalled XP and it got online like a charm. Apparently I had some driver issues after all. I reinstalled it for other reasons though. I wanted to clean my desktop up to use it as a gaming only rig from now on. But yeah, now I can use it for multiplayer stuff to, so it's win-win :)
