School internet is unreliable

Okay, when I ping any site, there is on average a 12% packet loss. This makes games unplayable, and browsing the internet intollerable. The computer department says they have tried every firewall tweak they can think of. They go through ONE.net. Is this most likely on the school's end or their ISP's? Thanks for the help.

Try a tool like Ping Plotter. It will show you where the loss is occuring and make it much easier for you to specifically identify the area that's dropping the packets.

You can do a "tracert" also (tracert www.cisco.com...whatever address). It'll give you a hop-by-hop accounting of the delays. Depending on the firewall in use, tracert may stop at the firewall/proxy (everything you tracert stops at one or two hops).

Good Luck

depends really, I'm thinkin thier internet access circuit is just WAY overloaded. Or it could be the firewall is just getting swamped with too much traffic.

12% is REAL bad.

We had this problem (small college) for about six months before Qwest got their act in gear and we got our third T1 setup. It could be, like Spidey said, the access tunnel where the traffic converges before it hits the T1 or T3 or OC whatever... we were down to modem speeds on our network before we got the 3rd T1 integrated. Could be they're just swamped.
