RALEIGH (WTVD) -- More than 2,000 students at Enloe High School spent most of Tuesday morning sweating and sweltering in classrooms after the air conditioning system broke at the school.

By midday, a decision was made that it was unsafe to keep students and staff inside. They were dismissed at 12:15 p.m.

Students said their classmates and teachers could barely focus due to the heat.
"I know a couple kids went home sick," said Enloe High School Senior Jaylin Perkins.

"It's been really tiring, concentrating was really hard," said senior Lauren Koop. "Class was really, really hot."

"I was going to pass out to be honest with you," said junior Tim Newton. "Like it was so hot, I was sweating as soon as I came into class."

Maintenance crews are working to fix the problem. The district said they expect all the repair work to be finished in time to reopen the school on Wednesday.

School officials say if the repair work isn't finished in time, an email will be send out. If parents and students don't hear anything, that means things are "business as usual."
And so, if they can't fix it, that means no school tomorrow.

This week is a 3 day school week (Monday was Labor Day, Friday is a Teacher Workday), well now its a 2.5 day week, but it could be a 1.5 day school week this week :D

When I was in grade school we didn't have AC. :)

They used to ask parents to send in fans during the hotter months.

We were not allowed to wear shorts (boys) and had to wear slacks or jeans, even on the hottest days. Girls could wear skirts.

We were allowed to have a water bottle on our desk. Normal school rules forbid food or drink in classrooms.

to be fair though for buildings constructed with AC in mind (e.g. no window that can be opened), when AC goes it gets becomes a greenhouse.

When I was in high school, only the library and computer lab had AC. We just used to open up all the windows and run a box fan.

My 5 year old has no air in her school. It was in the mid to upper 90's all last week with heat indexes of 100+.
You children are weak.

This. When a building is constructed to depend on AC and it breaks then things can start really getting hot very quickly.

The windows can be open only because the fire marshal said they had to be :awe:

Our server room has their own AC unit and that room is still hot as hell

No but we had a dress code. Boys has to wear slacks or jeans with a polo or button down shirt. No t-shirts. No sneakers. Shirts tucked in with a belt was required.

No pants on the ground - though that culture didn't really exist yet.

You know you're going to have to make this time up, right? You're probably going to get a shorter winter break.

Kids these days are pussies. 15 years ago we didn't have AC in any of the buildings I went to. Heck, the heat barely kept the school above 70 in MN.

Ridiculous that kids can't deal with the heat. I guess they needed their cell phones and ipads.

Usually not until 3 or 4 days are missed, or at least that's how it was in the Great White North back in my day...

And really, it's high school. I'm not sure why everyone is being so dramatic. I am fairly confident that the vast majority of us endured high school at some point in our lives. It's not like it's some great embarrassment.

2 years of middle school without A/C. Kids today spend too much time making their bodies and minds weak to a point where they can't physically and/or mentall handle hardships, even the simplest and natural of ones.

People younger than me are dumb, destroying the world, and should be publicly shamed. Now get off my lawn. #yolo #swag

And I used to walk 5 miles in 5 ft of snow, just so I could get to school.
