Today, for first time (I checked Event Viewer history and today's are only ones of this type), I am getting Schannel 36887 errors.

They read, "The following fatal alert was received: 40."

It happened twice today with about 4-6 of those error messages over a second or two each time in Event Viewer.

No mention of program/application that caused it.

I use Google Chrome and have for some time. My computer is from May 2012 and Event Viewer has no history of these errors until today when I checked.

(1) What would cause this - how should I troubleshoot?
(2) I noticed nothing as a user, I was just checking my Event Viewer and noticed it today. Is the error message something I should just ignore - not important?

I notice this thread is a few months old, but I've got these same errors now showing up on a couple of our Windows 2008 R2 Domain Controllers. So this seems to not be limited to a personal/workgroup environment. Is anyone else seeing these? I haven't been able to figure out a pattern to even begin to determine where the cause might be. It seems they started after we applied the most recent round of Windows Updates however, which includes Microsoft Office 2010 SP2.

Some quick googling seems to indicate that schannel fatal alerts are related to SSL certificates:

As a general comment from a Microsoft engineer, This error message indicates the computer received an SSL fatal alert message from the server ( It is not a bug in the Schannel or the application that uses Schannel). Sometimes is caused by the installation of third party web browser (other than Internet Explorer).
