As some of you may know from these threads:

Hurricane Food and Hurricane Katrina is coming for me! that Katrina was on her way.

Here is the story of how things went where i live, sorry for poor spelling or wording, i have not slept well since the storm hit and due to this i am still not thinking very clearly:

The People:

Schadenfroh: Myself, no brothers or sisters

Father: He was in Bay Saint Louis when Camille came ashore about a mile from the beach, he stays thru every hurricane after staying put in Camille. But says he never will after this one.

Mother: She is from where I was born.

Uncle: Lives in Waveland, Mississippi, house about 2 miles from the beach, evacuated to our house for the hurricane. He is my father?s brother.

Aunt: Uncles wife (of course). Owns a shop near the beach in Bay Saint Louis.

2 year old cousin: 2 year old kid, never runs out of energy and has the blood sugar of a humming bird. Daughter of my said Aunt and Uncle.

Cousin : Mellow kid, attends a private Catholic school in Bay Saint Louis, in middle school. Quiet kid and loves video games. Brother of 2 year old cousin and son of my aunt and uncle (of course).

The place:
I live in a rural area of Mississippi, about 100 miles inland.

The story:
Several days before the storm hit, my Uncle, Aunt and 2 cousins came to stay with us for the storm. They reserved a hotel room in town but stayed with us (don?t know why they did not stay at the hotel). They came early to avoid the huge traffic that was expected. The night they arrived, I was at another of my cousins? house about an hour north of my house. She was having a birthday party and the bulk of the immediate family from my mother?s side was there. (I am closer to my mother?s side of the family than my fathers side for my mothers side lived much closer than my fathers side?. And they are saner. She is the closest thing I have to a sister, she is also the only first cousin I have on my mothers side) My mother was unable to attend for she had a severe cold and stayed behind sick in bed. I came back that night to the site of signs about the interstate closing off going south, so I took some backroads to get back home on my way back from the party.

The two days before the storm passed fair enough. My family that evacuated to my house from Waveland began to get on my nerves well before the storm hit. My 2 year old cousin found my report for English Comp II and destroyed it before i found its shredded remains and taped it back together (this really pissed me off). My other cousin (8th grade) and I shared my PC up until the storm hit. I made the mistake of showing him Everquest 2 and he got hooked on it and thus i spent a good deal of my time reading. We just basically partied up until the storm came. I slept late the day the storm came ashore. I woke up to winds sustained to about 20 miles an hour or so with some gusts.

I came down stairs to see my aunt and mother glued to the TV. My uncle was upstairs and his cell phone rang and my dad answered it for him, an automated voice answered that said, "STENNIS SPACE CENTER IS AT CONDITION 2" and disconnected. My uncle was told of that... whatever it meant, (he is an engineer down there and works for Boeing). My aunt gets diarrhea every time she gets nervous and thus I spent the time until the weather started getting bad cleaning my bathroom of her mess. About 30 minutes after i cleaned up my bathroom from her last jumbo drop, the power went out. In our subdivision, we have septic pumps and we cannot send anything down the drain without power or it will simply back up into the house. (ironically, we were getting a generator installed into the house about a month after the hurricane was supposed to hit, but when we hired the electrician, we had no idea this was going to happen between now and then.)

My aunt freaked out when she found she would have to use a bucket with her diarrhea nerve problems and left for the hotel that said that they had a generator. She kept asking my dad over and over why she could not flush and finally they left to the hotel because she was a nervous wreck (and as I said before what she does when she gets nervous). By this time the winds were gusting to about 40 MPH and she sent my uncle back to get a radio and flashlights from us (they brought nothing with them save food and clothing).

When my uncle came back he told us that the hotel's generator did not work and they had no power either, but they swiftly left to go back to her after getting a radio and taking half of our flashlights. My father, mother and I were now at the house by ourselves. We have a two story home and of course we were on the first floor. The winds were getting really bad, we turned on the TV and heard that it should really hit us in the next couple of hours.

Katrina did arrive in force. The eye wall passed over us and Katrina was a Category 3 hurricane by the time it hit us. The pressure changes were making strange sounds and we could see the garage doors warping because of the pressure drop. Inside the house other odd things happened. It would get very cold and then get very hot (everyone of us noticed this, don?t know if it was our nerves or not). We have a small window on our front door and i watched out for a little while.

Outside was the Category 3 hurricane. Things were flying off of houses in front of us. I saw two very old pine trees snap in half and crash into my neighbor?s house. I ran back to the pantry (at the center of the house) and put my motor cycle helmet on after I saw the power lines in front of our house snap like a tooth pick and come crashing down just feet from or front door. Inside the pantry we could hear trees crashing outside and the wind howling. Our ears were feeling funny from the massive pressure changes that were taking place and the strange temperature changes were also happening more frequently. The local news station we were watching on our portable TV in the pantry went off the air.

My dad yelled that several trees just crashed thru the roof our or neighbors house behind us. Earlier we had watched the same happen to the neighbor?s house in front of us thru the tiny window in our front door (which is very sturdy). I sat in the pantry for the next two hours white as a sheet as the world outside was howling. My father and mother near me were praying and I did the same. Funny enough, I fell asleep and awoke god knows how long later.

I went outside, the storm had passed and the wind was still gusting about 20 miles an hour. The neighborhood was ruined. Nearly all of my neighbors had trees in their houses. We lost half our trees on our property, but luckily none crashed into our house. We have some roof damage and our siding is also damaged. One of our neighbors who had lost their entire roof had all of their shingles blow into our yard. Debris was everywhere, scraps of metal, shingles, tree debris, you name it. Power lines and poles were down in our side yard and across our driveway, blocking it.

Trees were on every road in the subdivision and everyway in and out was blocked. My dad started just picking up the shingles and stacking them, I did this a little but did not see a point for they just scattered again once another gust came. My mother was on her knees thanking God that we were alive. My father was able to make some phone calls to my grandmother in Florida. We could not reach anyone on their cell phone in the state, save one of my father?s coworkers. (cell phones worked immediately after the storm for many hours, unless you tried to call someone in the state of Mississippi, but stopped working the next day) We just went back inside and went to sleep.

The next day we all awoke to the sound of chainsaws. The work of clearing the streets so we could get out began. My father said that this was the same sound of the day after Camille. We of course knew the power lines that littered our yard were not energized so we just jumped over them (no other way to get off our property for they were down everywhere). I went down to talk to the president of the subdivision and nearly all the trees on his land were snapped like toothpicks. He had a massive generator (diesel at that and was very loud) so he was not affected much. He had no damage at all to his house, not even a missing shingle, but every tree he had was destroyed.

My neighbors across the street showed us the new atrium in their living room. We cut up the tree that was on our property that fell into the yard behind us (luckily it just fell and did not fall into their house; several other trees on their property did, however). We helped them clean their yard up after we did all we could for ours, we could not clear off two of the trees from our land for they were suspended by power lines. Several days later, the phone company came out and cut these as soon as they were able.

The cell phones no longer worked the day after the storm, no signal at all. We guess that since they worked for several hours after the storm that they were on generator power and just ran out of fuel. Our local TV station was back on the air and we watched pictures that were coming in from the coast, but no word of Waveland or Bay Saint Louis other than they were in the hardest hit county of Mississippi. My parents had road the two bikes we had to the hotel where my uncle and aunt were staying and found that they were ok. As soon as the roads in town had cleared they left for Alabama or somewhere away from the devastation. We had to stay for we were still boxed in inside our neighborhood and could not get any of our vehicles out until some trees were cut away.

We had filled the 44 gallon fuel tank of the Excursion full before the storm, we were planning on siphoning fuel from it until we discovered a nice little screen inside the fuel tank that did not allow it. But I still had a full tank in my Mercury (gets 25 MPG instead of the 11 MPG in the excursion). My mom and I left to restock on supplies after about 3 days and to clean clothing and towels that were soaked when we used them to absorb the water that was coming into our house from the massive rainfall. My father stayed behind because of his workplace. My mom is a teacher and her school was closed until further notice, same with my college (but college is open again, as that is where I am posting this from).

We went to a Gatsen (spelling?), Alabama, it was the first town we found with hotel rooms, laundry mat, and a good supply of fuel. We picked up supplies, washed clothes, I managed to get a shave, hot shower, and cup after cup of fresh coffee into me before returning. Driving thru Birmingham is hell, but so is dodging downed trees in the middle of the road back home I guess.

We came back home and my father had went into work and they had to get the payroll out. They bribed a guy in town to let them use his satellite uplink to send the payroll data for the plant out so that peoples bank accounts would not bounce with the auto withdraw. By this time the subdivision smelled awful. People had piled their feces in garbage bags and left them outside for none of our septic systems worked because of the pumps needing power.

The government in my area did NOTHING to clear ANY roads in my area. EVERY bit of work was done by neighbors to clear the vital roads in my area. Looting was taking place in town (national guard still no where to be seen, local police did everything they could, this was not in Hattiesburg, btw, but a smaller town less than an hours drive from it).

Gas lines were 3 hours long in town once power was turned on at the gas stations. I was at the tanks with my mother and she told me to live a little room for a guy to get out, we let him out and he thanked us for it, but as soon as he had left another guy took our place in line that had 2 55G barrels in the back of his truck to fill with gas. I was very close to taking the .38 revolver my grandfather had given me and making him take his place at the back of the line. One of my dads friends made a fuel run to Meridian with his nephew. They brought several barrels back. They were worried that some people would mess with them, so they brought their AK47 and "street sweeper" shotgun. Some guys actually did stop them but the said nephew stood up on the back of the truck with the "street sweeper" and asked if they had a problem with them, they said no and backed off.

A few days after that was over, the National Guard came into our town. Order was restored at the gas station, curfew was in place and the wait for gas and groceries shortened to less than an hour after they arrived. Now there are very short lines for gas an you can get it after about a 10 minute wait.

Water was given out as well as ice and MREs about 3 days after the storm hit and we are still having ice and water given out but the food supply has improved greatly and many of the fast food joints have reopened with a limited menu and some even have a full menu.

Utility situation at my home:

Power came back yesterday, went off again, and then came back again today.

Water came back 3 days ago, but looked like ale and/or tea until 2 days ago. Complications mainly due to a busted water main up the road.

Cell phones started working about a week ago, but all the phones were roaming and acting very strange and still are. At the hotel we stayed at in town (we got the hotel room from my uncle who left for Alabama and we kept it until today, it was our only source for water, power came back online their about 6 days ago, because the power crews were staying there) I saw two sisters with identical cell phones on identical plans, one of their phones had a strong signal and was not roaming and the other was roaming and had a poor signal. Communications are getting better and better but the phones of those that use Alltel in my area appear not to work properly. But, my TracFone does seem to work well.

Sewage: Could not flush due to no power, no one was able to flush in our neighborhood until yesterday when power came back and you can tell by the smell. Our septic pump died today of unknown reasons and we are going to try to find someone to fix it, but unable to do so yet.

Air conditioning: One of our units (we have central heat and air with separate units for the 2nd floor and the 1st floor of our house) appears to be damaged and is causing a sulfur smell to fill the upstairs, we shut it down immediately and the A/C repairman should come out tomorrow.

Land phones: Down, no word on when it will be restored.
Cable TV: Down
Comcast Internet: Down

Comcast has no idea how long before cable/internet is restored in our area. They will die if they bill us. Luckily my college?s T1 is backup and I can post from here, the lab is open until 9PM.

My parents are close to a nervous breakdown because of the series of unfortunate events that have taken place, my mom was just getting off of antidepressants before the storm, I hope she does not have to go back to them, there has not been a singe day since the storm that she had not cried, I feel so sorry for her. My dad is stressed to the max because they are working him so hard at work (he is information technology and they are making everyone working the loading docks among other things, he is forced to stay well past off time and work on Saturday and labor day).

My family:

Grandfather?s law office in Waveland: 10 feet of water in it, ruined. (no insurance)

Grandfather?s house in Bay Saint Louis: 6 feet of water in it, ruined. Evacuated to Atlanta before the storm. (no flood insurance)

Uncles house in Waveland: 3 feet of water in the 2nd floor of the building, ruined but oddly enough no windows broke. (insured)

Aunts store in Bay Saint Louis: Only a slab remains (insured, will not reopen though)

Great uncle: Unknown of how his apartment faired, but is currently at a shelter at a Methodist church down there and being taken care of by them (ironically he is an Atheist).

Other Great Uncle in Bay Saint Louis: House on the beach, no word yet and my uncle could not reach his house because of the devastation. His house survived Camille as did he and he decided to ride it out, I hope he is ok.

Great Aunt Bay Saint Louis: Her adopted son was in an air conditioned jail thru all of this, so he is fine. Her house has 3 trees in it and she road it out inside the house and remains there as of now and refuses to evacuate, her daughter is there with her. No contact other than my uncle going down a few days ago with my grandma from Florida.

Great aunt in Biloxi: Held out with 2 of her friends inside her house, refuses to evacuate due to looters, she is ex air force so she can handle herself I believe, (was in the great Alaskan earth quake). She said that the National Guard said that if she was to stay, she would have to be armed, which she is? to the teethe. She says that she has yet to see any power trucks or anything and that the National Guard is about to do a total lockdown of her area, we are in contact with her via cellphone.

Cliff Notes
1. Hurricane hit us and we got pwned.

I read that all the other ATers that i knew about from Mississippi are fine, cheers Blue Weasel and Chaotic:beer:

I wish everyone from the aflicted areas well and hope that we can get this state rebuilt before too long. It was rough but we are all alive. Teliasen (also an AT member and friend of mine is also fine and has split to Vicksburg).

Thanks to all the people from the other states who have aided Mississippi during this time. Many of the people i see working down here are from other states, cheers to all of them:beer:

A quick recovery to you and the family Schadenfroh. When I read these stories I can only imagine how surreal the events are as they happen to you.

That's harsh, especially for your relatives that were lacking in the flood insurance department. This whole thing hits home for me at bit since I was born in Pascagoula, which also got spanked pretty hard by Katrina.

Glad you're still okay. Well, as okay as you can be in the circumstances.

Scary story. It brings back memories of my time in Andrew that I hadn't remembered in a long time. I am glad you are ok. It will get better. You guys might get nervous when the next big storm comes through and it may seem like life will never get back to normal but eventually it does and it becomes something to make you stronger.

Glad you and your family are OK.

We have a friend that had a house on the Point in Bay St Louis.

All that is left is the giant trees and a pile of ruble and slab where the house used to be. Some of the front stairs are still there. They lost 4 out of 5 cats. When they arrived they found one cat on top of the lumber pile of what was the house cleaning himself.

Amazing they have power restored over there while they cannot restore it here.

Slight update (sorry no pics yet, they are on my USB memory key, which i forgot to take with me) posting from my grandparents house that is fully back up.

Power has gone about for about 2 hours every other day ever since it came back on. We got our sewer pump fixed about 4 days ago but today/yesterday the county finally got around to picking up all the debris that we had piled on the side of the road. But in the process, they busted a water main while using that iron claw thing they use to pick the stuff up as well as a septic line. So everytime someone in this side of the subdivision flushes, it goes into the guy a few houses over yard. They fixed the main this evening, so our water is back this evening but i talked to the president of our subdivision and says that it will take about 3 days or more to find someone that can fix the septic line. Untill then he said just to continue flushing like normal (he does not get along well with the people who have the broken line in their yard, cant blame him, those people are asshats, karma i guess that it broke in their yard).

Comcast came out and ran some guide wires along our new power poles and said they hoped to have cable/internet restored in about a week from now. The airconditionar has been fixed as well, but the siding blowing in the wind of Lovely Rita can keep one awake at night, woke me up several times.... probably going to be about 2 weeks before the insurance company will give us the go ahead to hire someone to mend it (and more importantly pay out). Insurance guy came by thursday of last week and has not gotten back to us yet.

Something odd that happened during the gas shortage here (now over, but prices have went up by about 25 cents). FEMA seized tons of gas from the stations around here (payed them for it, but caused us to have shortages) and sent it east towards Alabama in massive truck convoys instead of sending it south, or at least that was what they were showing on the local news:confused:.

BTW, last weekend went down to waveland/baysaint louis to help relatives clean up down there. It is bad..... but i will wait untill i can find my memory key with the pics before giving you that story.

Glad your ok. My boss just got back from Biloxi with video cam footage of hospital damage down there that the company will likely be repairing. It looks nasty.
