It's not a topping because it's the sauce. When you have ranch on a pizza you don't generally have marinara sauce, unless you add the ranch yourself, in which case it's a condiment.

Except in the buffalo pizzas which we used to serve mentioned above.
in addition to pizza sauce, you had the choice of ranch, blue cheese, or none as a topping.

It's a sauce or a dip, but not a topping. toppings go on top of the cheese. I get ranch with my pizzas and breadsticks everytime I order from the local college pizza place and dip my crusts or cheese sticks or even pizza slices in it. But it's not a topping.

And for the unrealistic everything is a topping, they might just not be appetizing argument- ridiculous. Common sense comes into play.

a Range rover is not a pizza topping, though you could put it on a pizza and a blue whale could probably eat it and die thereafter. rat poison also not a pizza topping. nor is a roast.

... ranch is as much a seasoning as mayonaise.

Seasoning = salt, pepper, paprika, cocoa...

ranch is a sauce or dressing.
